Some Do’s For The New Year
BY DR. HERBERT SPAUGH
(9
Each year at this time I re
print from my Scrap Book some
“Do’s” for the New Year:
Keep non-skid chains on your
tongue. They may save you from
crashing into someone else’s
business.
Always say less than you
think. You won’t learn much
talking. Cultivate a pleasant
voice. How you say a thing often
counts for more than what you
say.
Make promises sparingly and
keep them faithfully. Your word
should be one of your most val
uable assets.
Tell the truth. One lie calls
for another. In the end you will
be caught, and it will be the
wrong end.
Watch your work and not the
clock, A long day’s work makes
a long day short. A short day’s
work shortens your chance of
getting ahead.
Mind your own business, and
in time you may have a business
of your own to mind.
Don’t do anything that will
hurt your self-respect. A man
who will steal for the boss will
steal for himself. He knows that,
if you don’t.
Be polite to your family and
your immediate business asso
ciates. Those closest and dear
est to you deserve the most con
sideration, not the least.
Never pass up an opportunity
to say a kind or encouraging
thing to or about someone. It
never hurts you, and it always
helps the other fellow.
You may be surprised to find
in the end that you helped your
self.
Show interest in others. Let
everyone you meet feel that you
regard him as a person of im
portance. The best way to get
others interested in you is to be
interested in them.
Be cheerful. Learn to hide
your aches and pains under a
smile. Few care if you have a
headache, earache or rheuma
tism.
Remember our most intimate
friends and dear ones deserve a
certain amount of privacy.
Avoid low-rating a thing be
cause you don’t possess it. Re
member Aesop’s fable about the
fox and the grapes. Jealousy is
a good ndi’ationofa little mind.
Pay no attention to ill-natured
remarks about you. So live that
nobody will believe them.
Dont’t try to be anything but
a gentleman or gentlewoman.
That means one who has consid
eration for God, man and all His
creatures, and whose life is
governed by the Golden Rule.
Dr. Spaugh’s recently pub
lished biography, “The Boy, the
Man, the Bishop” can be se
cured from your bookstore or
dered from the Everyday Coun
selor in care of this paper. The
price is $6.50 including tax and
handling.
