DEAR SALLY
BY SALLY SHAW
DEAR SALLY: I’m a re
spectable married woman of 26,
driven almost to distraction by
the unwelcome tactics of a
certain married man who
attends our church. Seems this
fellow finds it impossible to
talk with me after church, or
at any church social affair,
without pawing at me...finger
ing a necklace or bracelet I
happen to be wearing, smooth
ing out the collar of my dress,
squeezing my chin between his
thumb and forefinger, or even
brushing over my hair with his
hand. I don’t want to appeal to
my husband for fear of creat
ing a big scene, but I must do
something. What? SHOPWORN.
DEAR SALLY: I’m a girl
about to be married. Both of
my parents died while I was a
baby, and my mother’s unmar
ried sister took me into her
home, adopted me, and reared
me as her own. She’s a wonder
ful person, and I’ve always
been proud to be known as
“Miss Susan’s daughter.” How-
every, I am now in a dilemma
as to the wording of my wed
ding invitations, especially
since some of these will be
mailed to my finance’s rela
tives and friends out of town
and might cause some specu
lation when they read an invi
tation from “Miss Susan
Brown* to the marriage of
“her daughter.” I’ll appreciate
your advice on this. MAE.
DEAR SHOPWORN: The next
time nimble-fingers lay a paw
on you, take hold of it firmly,
remove it, and place it at his
side. This should get your mes
sage across to him.
DEAR SALLY: I’m a young
man with my own bachelor
apartment where I am planning
to throw a large dinner party.
The big fly in the ointment is
that my girl friends wants to
serve as hostess, and I’m a-
fraid of this for the reason
that it might give my other
guests the erroneous impres
sion that she’s “intimately ac
quainted” with my apartment,
and this could be very em
barrassing not only to me but
to this very nice girl. How can
I handle this? HARRY.
DEAR MAE: ' Word the in
vitations: “Miss Susan Brown
requests the honour of your
presence at the marriage of her
adopted daughter, Mae Ellen,
to Mr. John Lee Summers,
etc.”
DEAR HARRY: Accept the
young lady’s offer, and a com-
mendabee one it is too. An
assist from the opposite sex
can be very helpful when you’re
playing the host Later, when
your guests are departing, you
can quiet any possible wagging
tongues by also departing at
the same time on the escort
of your girl friend to her home.
DEAR SALLY: A good wo
man friend of mine frequently
visits me in the afternoon with
her little baby, which she
usually places either on our
sofa or our bed for a nap.
Invariably after she has left
I find a big wet spot where the
baby was sleeping. I don’t want
to rish hurting this friend’s
feelings, but don’t you think I
should mention this to her the
next time she visits with the
baby? MRS. V.
DEAR MRS. V.: Much bet-
tor if you have some plastic
sheeting available and place
this under the baby the next
time your friend visits. More
than likely she does the same
thing herself in her own home.

the hand-picking and destruc

Q. Do you have informa
tion on canning pecans? I have
a heavy crop and would like to
keep some for future use. M. M.
Abbeville.
A. Pecan meats may be
packed in cans or glass jars
and heat-processed, as a pro
tection against insects and
molding. Follow these direc
tions: 1-Dry meats slowly to
three percent moisture (until
they are crisp and “rattle”
when shaken in the hand), using
air draft at 225 degrees or
lower. 2-Pack Pack hot meats
in pint tin or glass contain
ers and seal. 3-Process under
five pounds of steam pressure
for 10 minutes, or in boiling
water bath for 30 minutes. 4-
Cool and store in a cool, dry
place.—Marie S. Hindman, ex
tension specialist, nutriilon.
of insect that punctures at the
ground and leaves jelly like
clusters at the base. Plums are
usually nice until they begin to
ripen, then they have punc
tures or worms. How can I
fcontrol this? R.B.T.,Kershaw.
Q. I’ve been told that the
reason I have so many ground
mole burrows in my lawn is
that the moles are looking for
food. A lot of organic matter
was incorporated into the soil
before grass planting. What can
I do to combat the moles? A.H.

Q. I have a nice plum tree
that gets borers or some sort
A. Without specimens, it
appears that you have two pro
blems: the peach tree borer
which punctures at the ground
and causes a jelly-like sub
stance, and insects (curculio)
which cause worms in the
fruit. We’re sending a copy of
Extension Bulletin 123, Grow
ing Fruits at Home. You will
note that the time has passed
for using paradichlorobenzene
for this year, even if you could
find it Commercial growers
have now gone almost entirely
to a trunk spray of Thiodan. To
control the curculio, follow the
spray schedule.
A. We agree that you’ve
been given the right word. The
moles are looking for food,
but they are essentially not
plant feeders. Most of the time
they are after fat white grubs,
mainly larvae of the green
June beetle. These beetles lay
eggs and they prefer organic
soils. If you’ll treat the soil
for white grubs and do an
effective job, the moles will
leave and you should be free
of their annoyance with six
months.-- W. C. Nettles,
principal extension specialist,
entomology.
