ember 5, at four-thirty Dena
Heaton was given a party in
honor of her 8th birthday at the
home of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Clifton Heaton, Sr., 103
Milling Street. Twenty girls
and boys enjoyed playing party
games. Refreshments, con
sisting of birthday cake, ice
cream, candy and kool-aid, was
served by Mrs. Heaton and
Mrs. Ruth Leopard.
Dena received a lot of nice
gifts.

Holds Line
On Tuition

The action was decided at
the semi-annual meeting ofthe
College’s Board f Trustees
last week. Tuition will remain
at $1,300, board and room at
$920, and student fees at $190
fur the school year for a total
of $2,370.
Dr. A. G. 1). Wiles, presi
dent of the College said, “Even
though we arenot going to raise
our costs for the 1971-72 school
year, we may have to consider
it in the future unless private
colleges are able to obtain state
assistance or unless in
flationary costs decrease ap
preciably.*
Dr. Wiles agrees with educa
tors across the country who
say that a college cannot in
crease tuition indefinitely. If
it does, tlie college will reach
what Logal Wilson, president
of the American Council on
Education, calls the “law of
diminishing returns,* which
Wilson thinks many private
colleges are reaching now.
“You get a dropoff in en
rollments at private institu
tions,* Wilson said, “When the
middle class can get it free
down the street withopen ad
missions.’
“i am convinced,’ Dr. Wiles
added, “That South Carolina
private colleges are approach
ing the state of diminishing
returns, as Mr. Wilson thinks.’
