Dear
Sally
BY SALLY SHAW
DEAR SALLY: I’m a girl
soon to be married, and here’s
my crazy, mixed-up little pro
blem. I live with my mother
and her second husband, and
my father is likewise re
married. My finance’s parents
are likewise divorced, and both
now living with their second
spouses. As it so happens, all
these people are very friendly,
belong to the same club, and
socialize together quite often.
My mother wants all of them
invited to my wedding. Do you
think this would work out all
right, and is it proper?
PUZZLED.
DEAR PUZZLED: Why not?
Certainly, if everything is as
friendly among these persons
as you say, it shouldn’t spoil
your wedding. And I hope you
and your young man will be
demonstrating to all these
people how long-lasting and
enduring the sacred vows of
marriage can l>e...and should
be.
DEAR SALLY: Please tell
me, when a person is playing
bridge and is sure he has the
remaining three or four
tricks and doesn’t want to waste
time playing out the hand, is it
all right for him to lay down
his hand and say, “The rest are
mine* 9 BIG DEAL.
DEAR BIG DEAL: Yes,pro
vided he explains just why the
remaining tricks are his, as
for example, “I lead to the
dummy’s king with my four,
then get back to my hand with
the jack, and my ten is good,*
or something of the kind that
will explain to any slower
players that he is right and
that they haven’t been taken.
DEAR SALLY: I married a
widower five months ago, and
affectionate toward me--except
when his two married children
are arbund. In their presence
his manner is entirely different
cool and impersonal, almost as
though I were just a friend in
stead of his wife. This hurts
me deeply, and I would ap
preciate very much anything
you might have to say about
it. MRS. X.
DEAR MRS. X.: I think you
are making much to much of
this. Your husband very likely
is still associating his children
with his late wife, their mother,
and when they are around this
association prevents his want
ing them to witness any obvious
show of affection towards you.*
But after all, you know he is
“very devoted and affectionate*
toward you...so you don’t need
any demonstrations of this in
the presence of others.
DEAR SALLY: I have been
dating a very fine young man
who is in business for himself
and very successful, too. How
ever, his success is going to his
stomach. He has a ♦remendous
appetite and is gaining weight
at a spectacular rate. He’s
getting so fat that I’m becom
ing embarrassed to be seen
with him. Is there any way I
can drop a gentle hint without
hurting his feelings? CON
CERNED.
DEAR CONCERNED: Idoubt
that a “gentle hint* will do it.
Tell him bluntly that he’s eat
ing himself out of your affec
tion, and insist longer, feel
better, and look much hand
somer.
DEAR SALLY: There is a
bachelor living in the apart
ment across the hall from us
who is a disgrace to the place.
He “entertains" women guests
two or three evenings a week,
and judging from the sounds
that emanate from his apart
ment they have a gay, riotous
time of it. We mentioned some
thing about this to our land
lord a couple of weeks ago, and
he told us he would see what
he could do. What he seems to
have done so far is nothing. Isn’t
there anything else that we,
respectable tenants, can do?
ACROSS THE HALL.
DEAR ACROSS: If your land
lord really objected to this
bachelor’s manner of living, he
would have done something
about it long before now. You,
as fellow tenants, have two
choices—either look the other
way or move.
NOTE TO BIG JOHN: Sorry,
but I side with your friends on
this. At this girl’s age of 16,
that seven-year gap in your
ages is.much greater now than
it would be if she were say
recommend that you confine
your dating to girls not more
than two or three years younger
than you...for at least another
three or four years.
