Q. I have a good many fig
bushes - several each of Lemon
figs, Celestes, Brown Turkeys
and Purple Ischlas. Some have
never borne and some bear
very poorly. I fertilize every
year and water during dry
spells. Sometimes they set a
good crop but the fruit grows
about half size and never ma
tures. Every year frost catches
a good many of the figs half-
grown. What should I do? Miss
H. H., Greenville
A. You have too many trees,
many of which are not adapt
ed to this climate. If you will
destroy all plants except the
Celestial, Brown Turkey and
Green Ischias, you can expect
much greater success. Some of
the others are normally grown
in warmer climate where they
are not killed back to the ground
by frost every year. In our
climate, when this killing back
occurs, the new shoots will
grow very rapidly in the next
growing season but will not set
figs in time for maturity prior
to cold weather.
You may also have some
figs that will require pollina
tion by an insect not native to
this part of the country. Re
duce your plants to the va
rieties suggested and your
prospects should improve mea
surably. We also continually
remind S.C. residents they
should buy nursery stock which
they know is adaptable to grow
ing conditions in this state.
--R.J. Ferree,principalexten-
sion specialist, horticulture.
Q. Foliage on myrhodendron
is brown and splotchy. Until a
few weeks ago it was real
green. In the spring, the blooms
would rot and fall off. I used
a recommended evergreen food
of 5-10-7. Can you help? Mrs.
J.E.M., Greenville
A. The brown splotches on
the leaves appear to have been
caused from drought; it doesn’t
appear to be a disease. Late
spring, frosts can affect buds
and blossoms. High humidity
with overcast is ideal for fun
gal infection of the bud. There
is very little we can recom
mend from this superficial
study, except that you be sure
the plant gets adequate mois
ture in dry periods and pro
tection from late frosts. The
fertilizer materials are ade
quate for good growth. --J.P.
Fulmer, assistant professor,
horticulture.
Q. Enclosed is a portion of a 1
marigold stem. Inside is some
kind of small worm which
ruined my marigolds and also a
late crop of peas in the gar
den. This worm enters the stalk
about ground level and causes
the marigolds to break down by
weakening the stalk. The peas
turn yellow and die. What can I
do for them? Mrs. E.L.B.,
Bennettsville
A. The specimen is the Eu
ropean corn borer. Corn has
been infested in every county
i n the state and this pest is
becoming an increasingly im
portant problem. It’s a com
parative newcomer to the list
of plant pest in S.C. It af
fects over 200 different kinds
of plants including field crops
and ornamentals. The larvae
overwinter in residues left a-
round the garden and produce
moths in the spring to start a
new life cycle. There are se
veral generations produced
every season.
It’s important to clean up and
turn under all old stalks of
plants, especially marigolds
and dahUas. The accepted
means of controlling the Eu
ropean corn borer is by spray
ing with Sevin at the rate of
two tablespoons per gallon of
water. —W.C. Nettles, princi
pal extension specialist, ento
mology and plant pathology.
