<1 \ I Lt. Pinson In Air Force Second Lieutenant James B. Pinson III, son of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Pinson Jr. of Rt. 1, Cross Hill, has entered U. S. Air Force pilot training at Laredo AFB, Tex. Lieutenant Pinson will fly the newest Air Force jet trainers and receive special academic and military training during the year-long course. He will be awarded silver pilot wings upon completion of the Air Training Command flying pro gram. A 1966 graduate of Clinton High School, the lieutenant re received his B. HERBERT SPA UGH What is the meaning of the Advent season? queries a cor respondent. “Some churches observe this at this time of the year.” The Advent season is the first part of what is called the Church Year. It is observed by churches which use the liturgi cal form of worship such as the Protestant Episcopal, the Lutheran, the Moravian and the Roman Catholic. Its use is of great antiquity. It has nine general seasons which em phasize the outstanding Chns- ian doctrine relating to the life of Jesus Christ. Its use generally carries with it a set of epistle and gospel lessons w'hich relate to that particular season. In the course of the year these lessons explain and emphasize the essential doc trines of the Christian Church. The different seasons are marked by the use in the sanctuary of various symbolic colors called the liturgical colors. The Advent season commences four Sundays be fore Christmas. It is a time of penitence and self-examina tion and preparation for true observance of Christmas. The liturgical color is purple. The first Sunday in Advent emphasizes the first coming of Christ in person to earth as the son of God. The second Sunday in Advent emphasizes the second personal coming of our Lord in person. This is still in the future. The third and fourth Sundays draw atten tion to fuller explanations of the meaning of the coming of Christ. The word Advent comes from the word Latin which means the coming one. Christmas of course, em phasizes the birth of Christ as a child in Bethlehem. It is a time f giving. As God gave his son, so we give our gifts to Him and to others. The color is white. The Epiphany seasons fall on Jan. 6 and celebrates the com ing of the Magi a Wise Men who were representatives of the Gentile race.o. Careful reading of scripture indicates that they did not come to wor ship the Christ at the same time the shepherds did, on Christ mas Eve. The color is white. The Lenten season which is another time of penitence and self-examination in prepara tion for Good Friday and Easter is 40 days, exclusive of the intervening Sundays. The color for Lent is purple. Good Friday emphasizes the sacrifice of God’s gift on the cross f a the sins of mankind. The color is black. Easter points newness of life after death following the Res- surection of our Lord on Easter morning. Ascension Day follows 40 days later and marks the com pletion of Christ’s ministry on earth. Pentecost, the 50th day fes tival, marks the first coming of the Holy Spirit in the new church. The nine gifts of the Holy Spirit are listed in 1 Corinthians 12; the nine fruits in Galatians 5. Trinity Sunday and the following Trinity season mark the end of the church year and emphasize the completeness of God the teacher, God, the Son and God, the Holy Spirit.
