Broad St. Methodist Church Over 100
In 1970, dedication services
were held for a new sanctuary
and educatioqal building at
Broad Street Methodist Church.
The new building replaced one
which was built in 1914. The
pastor of Broad Street
Methodist Church is Rev. Ben
Cunningham. However, the in
formation presented in this ar
ticle was prepared by his pre
decessor, The Rev. Edwin W.
Rogers.
Owing to the absence of
records we cannot give the
exact date of the organization of
the first church here, but we
know there was a Church and a
Sunday School in existence in
1857, for a Bible has been
preserved by the family of the
late James M. Wright, which
was presented to him by the
people of Clinton and vicinity in
token of their appreciation of
his services as Superintendent
of a Union Sunday School which
he conducted in the Methodist

church. The inscription on the
fly leaf bears the date August 8,
1857. Some years prior to this
date old Mount Zion Methodist
Church, which was located
about a mile west of Clinton and
which was one of the first
churches of this denomination
built in Laurens County, was
moved to the town of Clinton.
This first church built In
Laurens County, was moved to
the town of Clinton. This first
church built in Clinton was
located at the comer of West
Main and Laurens Streets, and
was a small frame building
For many years the Clinton
church was on the Laurens
Circuit and the preacher who
served it lived in Laurens, but in
1868 a Clinton Circuit was
organized, this church coupled
with five others in the
surrounding country, and the
preachers lived in Clinton. This
arrangement lasted for over 30
years, until 1905 when all of the
country churches, except
Sardis, were taken off and at
tached to o f '.»er circuits, and
Clinton and Sardis were made a
two church station. For only
four years this combination
lasted. Beginning with the
second pastorate of Rev. J. E.
Mahaffey, in 1909, the church at
Clinton was placed by itself.
There have been four church
buildings erected by Clinton
Methodists, and each one
marked a distinct Improvement
over its predecessors. All of
them except the present
building stood on the original
site. The first small building
was replaced in 1880 under the
pastorate of Rev. A. W. Walker,
by a larger frame structure. By
1904 the church had grown to
such an extent (hat a new and
better building was necessary.
That year under the pastorate
of Rev. G. M. Boyd, a beautiful
brick church was erected. The
late W. E. Nash, with R. Z.
Wright and B. L King, were
members of the building
committee. The names of the
others cannot be obtained. Since
that time the church has grown
repkily. In 1914 under the
pastorate of Rev. W.A. Fairey,
a great forward step was taken
In the erection of our present
modem, splendidly equipped
church, which there is no better
in the conference.
The building committee was
composed of B. L. King,
Chairman, B H. Boyd, W. H.
McMillan, J. D. Bell, H. D.
Henry, J. M. Pitts, W. H.
Simpson, J. F. Jones, and L H.
Davidson. On September 19,
1920, this new building was
dedicated by Bishop N. V. W.
Darlington; Rev. Henry Stokes
being the pastor at the time. It

of the moat handsome buildings
in the city.
The next forward step taken
was the erection of a beautiful

sonage on the lot just in the rear
of the church, facing Ferguaon

the last year of the pastorate of
Rev. Henry Stokes in 1930, and
was completed the next year.
We cannot get the records
farther back than 1881, but
beginning from that date a
comparison of the membership
and amounts raised the second
year of each decade will prove
interesting and will serve to
show the progress the church
has made In the last forty years.
In 1881 the six churches com
prised in Clinton circuits were
assessed $310.00 for the support
of their pastor. Clinton church
was assessed $30.00 of that
amount and the records show
that they failed to raise It by 80
cents. In 1891 the church had 79
members. The amount raised
for all purposes was $475.00; In
1901, there were 97 members
who gave a total of $441.00; in
1911,300 members, and the total
amount raised was $2186.00. In
1921 there were 412 members
who gave for all purposes
$11,797.00. The membership at
this time was 419. We have not
grown very much since then. As
of May 6, 1968, we have a
membership of 5J4.
At a Church Conference held
on Sunday, December 22, 1968,
the Congregation by unanimous
vote of those voting decided to
demolish the sanctuary and
educational unit built in 1914.
Demolition began on New
Year's Day, January 1, 1969.
The total cost of the new
building with new pews, carpet,
organ, etc will cost ap
proximately $337,651.90. Ser-
vices of worship are held at8:45
