Art of Bonsai
In general, creation of a
genuine bonsai tree takes
from 50 to 100 years. How
ever, by twisting the trunk
and restraining growth of
tops and roots, a compara
tively young tree can be
made to appear aged.

Dear Sally
BY SALLY SHAW
DEAR SALLY: We’reayoung
married couple, and very
social-minded. However, we
find ourselves running around
with a crowd of young people
whose antics aren’t too pleas
ing to us. We’ve been gather
ing every Saturday night in
one another’s homes, and as
the drinks flow there is a
distinct tendency on the part
of many of the revelers to
make advances toward other
persons’ mates. We would like
very much to cut out of this
particular group, but are a-
fraid that a reputatio of
“prudishness* or‘’squareness*
might stand in the way of new
friendships and our social life
would dwindle to nothing. W’hat
do you think about this? PRIN
CIPLES.
DEAR PRINCIPLES: If you
aren’t enjoying yourselves with
this particular crowd, it’s sen
seless to continue your atten
dance at its parties., and equally
senseless are your fears of a
social "boycott." There are
people, an overwhelming ma
jority of them, who enjoy par
ties without boozing it up and
who respect and love their own
mates.
DEAR SALLY: Our daughter,
age 21, has been proposed toby
a widower of 36 with two small
children, ages 5 and 7. She has
known him only three months.
We are very much afraid that
his prime reason is to acquire
a mother for his children, since
our daughter has already de
monstrated to him tier prowess
as a cook and also her ability
to get along with his kids. We’ve
tried our best to argue her out
of this, but the more we argue,
the more she seems set on
marrying this man. Please,
have you any advice for us?
HER PARENTS.
DEAR PARENTS: Stop the
arguing. This often has a way
of making young people even
more stubborn and defensive
about their choices. Instead,
ask her Ln a quiet and reason
able manner please to give this
at least another sir months be
fore deciding to enter marriage
with a man 15 years older than
she is and with two small child
ren. Maybe if you stop pro
testing, the stubbornness will
evaporate and she’ll see the
light herself.

Thank
DEAR SALLY: My wife has
been needling me about the way I
talk in my sleep. She accuses
me of spouting out the names
of old girl friends, girls I
dated before I met and
married my wife, and she
claims I say some very
“gushy* things abou them. Be
lieve me, I love my wife very
much and during my waking
hours I never even think of
other women--but my wife still
claims they must be very much
on my subconscious mind. How
about this? NEEDED.
DEAR NEEDLED: Your wife
must be losing a lot of sleep
just listening to you. However,
it’s a well-known fact that peo
ple who talk in their sleep give
very little information..Just a
sort of mumbo-Jumbo that
makes little or no sense at
all. I think your wife is putt
ing you on, and I advise you to
forget it.
NOTE TO SAMANTHA: Ad
just yourself to the fact that
you have been kissed off---
firmly and forever. His reason
that he is not ready for ro
mantic involvement is probably
the truth, and therefore no re
flection on you. By freeing you
from a relationship that was
headed nowhere, the young man
has actually dune you a big fa
vor.
DEAR SALLY: The husband
of a very good friend of mine
is gallivanting around with
another woman who works in
his office. He confided this to
my husband, who passed it on
to me. Pm heartsick about
this, and wonder if it’s my
duty as a friend to tell his
wife what is going on behind
her back. IN THE KNOW.
DEAR IN THE KNOW: Stay
out of this. It’s none of your
business. A real friend doesn’t
deliver this kind of news, the
kind of news that is sure to
hurt.
Authorized Change
Congressional consent is
required to change the de
sign of a U.S. coin before the
expiration of a 25-year per

when the John F. Kennedy
half-dollar replaced the Ben
jamin Franklin half-dollar,
which had been adopted in
1948.
