News of Joanna 'Tempory Duty’ For 42 Years B'MSfo.. HUBERT SttVUGH I * The next Sunday will be the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Little Church on the Lane of which I was pastor for 42 years. I hope to be there as Pastor Emeritus and Bishop to help celebrate the occasion. The prospect brings back many memories, of exciting and in teresting events over these years. Many of these will be recorded in my forthcoming biography, “Herbert Spaughthe Boy, the Man, the Bishop.’ It is in preparation and should be available by Christmas time. It has been two years in pre paration. As I look back over the years to the beginning of my ministry of the Little Church on the Lane in 1924, I realize that I never had an official call to that Church nor was I officially in stalled. So actually, Imight say I was on temporary duty there for 42 years. Our little congregation of 11 members was organized in 1920 by the late Bishop Edward Rondthaler. They had no re gular meeting place. Bishop Rondthaler or someone he would appoint, came to Char lotte once a month to conduct services. This continued until I came as the first resident pastor in 1924. I particularly remember the advice given me by Bishop Rondthaler when he sent me to Charlotte to try to develop a church. “Brother Herbert, re member that the Kingdom of God is bigger than the Mora vian Church. Your first re sponsibility is to minister to those in spiritual need, regard less of race, creed or de nomination. Secondly, you are a minister of the universal Christian Church. Thirdly, you are pastor of a local congrega tion. Fourthly, you are a minis ter of the Moravian Church. Through the years I have tried to follow that advice. Literally hundreds have come under our ministry for help and counseling. The majority of them did not stay to join the church of which I was pastor, but went back to the churches of their families. Some stayed to become substantial members of the Little Church on the Lane whose membership is new up wards of 600. The church has five buildings cow and is com pletely free of debt. In addition to what ministry we carry on from the Little Church on the Lane, this has been a far wider ministry con ducted the Everyday Counselor column which has reached into many southern states, with an estimated reading audience of between one and two million. My one regret about this ministry is that I have not been able to answer all the letters which had come to me from readers of this column. Today I invite Everyday Counselor readers to come to the Little Church on the Lane Sunday morning, November 8, and join in our 50th Anniver sary at U:00 A.M. I would like to greet you in person. Steps In Falling Away After two lesson* on “THE POSSIBILITY AND DANGER OF APOSTASY’. we want to tfive attention to this subject: Steps In Falling- Away. The Bible reveals may aspects in which a follower of the Lord may fall away or become unfaithful to Him Among these are Wrong concept to be met to become a Christian, Per verting the worship, Changing Church organiza tion, Unauthorized works of the Church, Wrong concepts of the truth of the gospel. But per haps the most common is the falling away from steadfast worship of God and persevering labor for His cause. Going back to the present world —to the kingdom of )sin and darkness from which once delivered. The FIRST STEP IS LOOKING BACK When one turns his back upon things once dear to him, things which gave him joy and pleasure, he should never look back. When thinking again upon former things, reliving those in memory, they may seem more pleasant than they really were. The appeal to the flesh may be great The trials and temptations to which he is being subjected and the menutal discipline required to be faithful may appear in an unfavorable light. The Israelites after salvation from Egyptian slavery, looked back and mourned for the fine foods of Egypt They remembered not the great burdens they bore, nor the cruelty of the Egyptians. Fleshly gratification seemed more desirable than freedom and salvation wits some trials and hardships which accompanied them. When one puts his hand to the plow, he must look forward if he is to plow a straight furrow. One who presists in looking back will soon make the second step of DRAWING BACK. Love for the Lord and His cause will begin to cool. i 0r Bible study and good works will lessen. This leads to irregularity in attend ance and less visiting the poor and the sick and talking with sinners about their salvation He shrinks from duty, falls back before the enemy, makes little resistance against the forces of evil TJis state is described in the Bible as being Weak and siddy’’ and “lukewarm.” (1 Cor. 11:30; Rev. 3:16) (to be continued) CHURCH OF CHRIST 603 North Broad Street Ctinton, 8.
