i 1 i J \ Toy Murphy JOANNA - Toy G. Murphy, 82, of 427 Browning Ave., died Thursday. A native of Union County, he had lived in Joanna 45 years. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Murphy and was a retired employe of Jo anna Mills. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Old Timers Club. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alice Craig Murphy; five sons, W. Charles Murphy of Joanna, Otis F. Murphy of Greenwood, Louis H. Murphy of Clinton and Millard B. and T. Harold Miflphy of Joanna; six grand children; and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday at Epworth Methodist Church. Burial was in Padgett Creek Baptist Church cemetery near Cross Keys. * * * Mrs. Gamer JOANNA - Mrs. Virgie P. Garner, 74, of 101 Banna St, died Saturday. Most of her life was spent in Joanna, she was a daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Porter Es tes of Joanna and the late Madi son Gry Porter. She was a re tired employe of Joanna Mills, a charter member of the Old Timer’s Club, a member and Sunday School teacher at Ep worth Methodist Church and a member of WSCS. Surviving also are a daught er, Mrs. Evelyn Templeton of Joanna; a son, Vernon W. Gar ner of Columbia; three sisters Mrs. Willie Mae Brock, Mrs. Gladys Thomas and Mrs. My rtle Fulmer of Joanna; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Epworth Methodist Church. Burial was in Rose- mont Cemetery. * * * Mrs. Smith Mrs. Mattie Smith, 78, of North Bell Street Ext., widow of Rufus Smith, died Sunday. A daughter of the late Jim Gilliam and Alice Copeland, she was a member of ML Zion AME Church in Joanna, the Clinton Women’s Aide Society No. 1 and the Laurens Women’s Aide Society No. 1. Surviving are a son, George W. Smith of Washington, D. C., two daughters, Miss Alice Ruth Smith and Mrs. Lillie Ree Mar tin of Clinton; three grand children; 10 great-grandchild ren; and a great-great grand child. G. F. Arrowood JOANNA - George F. Arro wood, 36, of Rt 2, Kinards, died Saturday in Greenwood. A native of Whitmire, son of Mrs. Daisy Slice Arrowood of Whitmire and the late George Allen Arrowood, he had lived near Joanna for five years. He was a foreman at Empress Homes Trailer Plant, a veteran and attended Pentecostal Holi ness Church at Whitmire. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Oswald Arrowood; a dau ghter, Lori Ann Arrowood of the home; three sons, Danile Ray, Thomas Gerald, and John Allen Arrowood of the home •two sisters. Miss Annie Arro wood of Whitmire and Mrs. Ruby Rhodes of GreenviUe and four brothers, Henry, Charlie and Johnny Arrowood of Whit mire and Grady Arrowood of Greenville. Funeral services were held Monday at Penecostal Holiness Church. Burial was in Whitmire Cemetery. * * * Mrs. Taylor POMARIA - Mrs. Lenora Halfacre Taylor, 66, died Fri day in Newberry. She was a sister of Mrs. Edith Shealy of Joanna. Other survivors include a son, two daughters, a brother, another sister and three grand children. Funeral services were held Saturday at St Phillips Luth eran Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Rice Mrs. Corrine Vaughn Rice, 58, wife of Hubert Rice, died in Greenwood Friday. She was a member of Wa- teree BaptistChurchnear Clin ton. Surviving also are a sister, Mrs. Clara Taylor of Barks dale; and two brothers, Wister Vaughn of New Orleans, La. and Lee Vaughn of Washington, D. C. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Wateree Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. * * * Robert Greene CANDOR, N. C. - Funeral services were held Friday for Hobert Greene of Candor who died Wectaesday, October 2L He was a brother of James C. Greene of Clinton and Verle Greene of Joanna. Other survivors include three other brothers and three sisters. Services were conducted at Candor Funeral Home with burial in Rosemont Cemetery in Clinton. * * * T. M. Turner WOODRUFF - T. M. (Matt) Turner, 68, of North Main St. Extension, died Thursday. He was a brother of Mrs. Emily League of Clinton. Other survivors include his wife, twodau^iters, three sons. Bids Opened On Final Phase Of Watershed On October 22, bids were opened in the Laurens Work Unit on the final construction contract, channel improve ment, on the Duncan Creek watershed Project. Eight bids were submitted. The low bid of $150,210.00 went to Peden Construction Company of Greenville. The contract calls for five miles of channel enlargement on the main Duncan Creek, beginning one mile above S.C. Highway No. 56 and extending about two miles below S. C. Highway No. 34. Frequent flooding and silt fiUed stream channels are the main pro blems in the area. The last dam in the project is now under construction and is scheduled for completion by November 10. This structure is located on Duncan Creek just above the city of Clinton pump ing station and will store ap proximately 129 mfllion gallons of water for the city ofClinton. Structural measures already completed are: Five flood- water retarding dams and four miles of channel improvement on Sand Creek and Beards Fork Creek. * * * four sisters, a brother and eight grandchildren. Chaucer’s Works Featured A solo dramatization of Geoffrey Chaucer’s THE CAN TERBURY TALES will be presented to Presbyterian Col lege students this Thursday by Rob Inglis, noted Australian actor who has toured through out the United States and Europe. The public is invited to at tend the performance in Belk Auditorium, starting at 10:10 a.m. Seating will be available without charge in the balcony.
