SEARS AWARDS—The Sears, Roe
buck Foundation has awarded anoth
er $1,000 to the Presbyterian College
library as part of its 1970 program
to distribute $19,750 to 21 private
colleges and universities in South
Carolina and a total of $1.5 million
to more than 975 colleges nationally.

1970 - 71 Student - Teacher
Achievement Recognition
(STAR) Program for Laurens
County, according to Ralph F.
Patterson, president of the or
ganization.
This is the fifth consecutive
year that the Clinton Chamber
of Commerce has sponsored the
STAR Program for Laurens
Cqpnty. The STAR Program
isf a project of the Education
Committee with DonG.Creigh
ton serving as chairman.
Chairman Creighton is making
plans for the county recogni
tion meeting to honor the STAR
Students and Teachers of the
county.
The STAR Program is spon
sored state-wide by the South
Carolina State Chamber of
Commerce.

lastic achievement.
The State STAR Student will
receive a $500 scholarship
from the Sears-Roebuck
Foundation and will make an
overseas tour via Pan-Ameri
can Airways. The State STAR
Teacher will receive a $500

The Greater Clinton United
Fund Campaign has reached
85 per cent of its goal, accord
ing to campaign chairman Al
vin Hueble.
Mr. Hueble said some citi
zens still haven’t been con
tacted in the house-to-house
residential canvass and there
are hopes that the campaip
goal can be reached.
He also reported that Pres
byterian College increased its
giving by 47 per cent over last
year. He said “We feel this
is a very significant increase
and we are grateful to those
who have given through PC.'

of Lakeside County Club will
meet for bridge and golf on

schools into one high schooL
The building for the new con
solidated high school would cost
about $3.5 million dollars and
would accomodate about 1,700
students. The four high schools
in the Laurens District include
Gray Court - Owings, Hickory
Tavern, Laurens and Ford.
Again, although this will affect
only the Laurens School Dis
trict, it must be voted on
countywide.
No. 3 School District 56—
This amendment would allow
School District 56 to increase
its bonded indebtedness up to
35 per cent of the assessed
value of the taxable property
in the district. James VonHol-
len, chairman of the School
District 56 Board of Trustees,
says the district does not have
an immediate need for this
limitation increase but that it
could be needed in the future.
He said he believes it would
be more business-like to have
the amendment voted on now
rather than waiting until there
is an immediate need for the
limitation increase.
The other constitutional a-
mendments include requests
from Charleston and Richland
counties on one ballot and there
is another large ballot for
statewide constitutional a-
mendments.

jointly by the Laurens County
Democratic Party and Laurens
County Republican Party.

Norris
Is Wounded
In Vietnam
PFC Ronnie O. Norris, 20,
was wounded in Vietnam on
October 19 during a mortar
attack.
A native of Joanna, he re
portedly lost both legs and
received head and facial
wounds. He had been in Viet
nam for three weeks.
PFC. Norris is a son of
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Norris of
121 Tillman Circle, Joanna. He
is in the U. S. Hospital
in Toyoka, Japan, where he
is being treated before being
returned to the United States.
He attended Joanna schools
and received his basic train
ing at Fort Jackson after being
called into service April 29,
1970.

The proposed rate for Sou
thern Bell’s service in con
junction with countywide toll-
free service was incorrectly
listed in last week’s Chronicle.
Southern Bell has offered to
make toll-free service avail
able for a 30-cent increase per
month for residential phones
and $1.50 per month increase
for business phones.
As proposed the service
would include all of the county
except Joanna and Cross Hill.
The three telephone com
panies involved will conduct
customer surveys in Novem
ber to determine public support
for the proposal.
General Telephone, which
serves the Laurens area, pro
poses an increase of 25 cents
per month for residental
phones and 75 cents for bus
iness phones.
Piedmont Rural proposes to
charge an additional 50 cents
for residential phones and$1.50
for business phones monthly.
