Women’s World
Clinton Newcomers Club
Enjoys Recent Parties
The Clinton Newcomers Club
have enjoyed several parties
recently. On October 3 a fare
well party for Mr. Jack Har-
rill, who left for Vietnam on
October 16, was given. A Hobo,
Hee Haw theme was used, with
red and white decorations used
at The Barn. Upon arrival
each guest was given a hobo
stick inscribed with their name.
Games of Charades were played
Square dancing was led by Mrs.
lone Wallace. All members and
guests were dressed in costum
es. Mr. and Mrs. James And
erson received the prize for
their costume.
Mr. Harrill was presented a
gift by the club.
A box supper was enjoyed.

On October 5, the Newcomers
held a party for the girls of
Cottage 26-A, Whitten Village,
although there were no birth
days during the month.
Games were played, and
songs were led by the club
president, Mrs. Curtis Wal
lace.
Refreshments of cookies and
punch were served.
Hostess were Mrs. Bill
Cherry, Mrs. Carron Waller
and Mrs. Vennie Smith.
Spooks and goblins were in
full force as the Clinton New
comers Club held their Hallo
ween party at the Camp Fire
Hut on October 24.
Seventeen members and
guests attended the masquerade
party. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth
Ward, dressed as babies, re
ceived the best dressed award.
Party bridge and other games
were enjoyed.
Refreshments of different
dips, cookies, chips, pickles,
cola and coffee were served.
B-PW Visits New City Hall
Civic interests keynoted the
role Clinton’s Business and
Professional Women’s Club
played, this year, in celebrat
ing the National Business Wo
men’s Week, October 18-24.
On October 19th some mem
bers went, as a group to the
preliminary organizational
session for the formation of
a Laurens County Historical
Society.
Another party represented
the Club at the Chamber of
Commerce Membership meet
ing on October 20th.
At both sessions, Mr. Wil
liam P. Jacobs, m. Chairman
of the Laurens’ County Tri-
centennial Committee, outlined
the County’s celebration plans
for November 8-14th.
The B & PW Club will con
tinue to sell Tricentennail

At the regular October meet
ing, twenty members toured
the New City Hall, under the
guidance of Mr. Brooks Owens,
County Clerk.
At the business session, vol
unteers accepted Mayor J. C.
Thomas’ request for assistance
in writing invitations for the
Open House at the City Hall
on Sunday, November 8th.
Mrs. B. McCrary and Miss
Eleanor Hudgens were welcom
ed as new members.
Special commendation was
accorded Mrs. Robert Johnson,
who recently receied her Ph.
D. degree.

rens Civic Organizations at

Garden Club
Welcomes
New Members
Mrs. C. Russell Huston, new
comer to Clinton, was wel
comed as a new member of
the Sun Bonnet Garden Club
at its November meeting on
Monday afternoon, the club
assembled at the home of Mrs.
Harry Ayers on Ansel Drive.
Each member answered the
roll call by presenting her
arrangement created to carry
out the theme “Arrangements
of Yesteryear”. Mrs. Marshall
Brown was chairman of the
annual club flower show and
admonished the members to
•Forget the rules and make
yourself an arrangement of
pleasant memories”. As the
arrangements were shown and
interpreted many treasured
keepsakes were seen as con
tainers, each one reviving me
mories of grandparents and
great-gran^arents, family
gatherings, and choice play
things of long ago. To introduce
her arrangements Mrs. Brown
read from a cookbook, pub
lished in 1901 and used by her
mother from 1914, some price
less bits of advice concerning
manners as well as cuisine.
Old-fashioned flowers as well
as blossoms that stirred me
mories were arranged in a
wide variety of charming con
tainers.
In the brief business meet
ing that followed, Mrs. Furman
Thomason, president, called on
Mrs. Dave Roberts, bazaar
chairman, who announced that
the annual bazaar will be held
on Monday, November 23, at
her hoe. Each member was
urged to bring attractive hand
made items as well as baked
goods, jams and jellies. Since
all go to city beautification.
The purchase of evergreen
shrubs for the plot downtown
was approved. Mrs. Huston’s
guest, Mrs. Justice, of Elyria,
Ohio, was welcomed
Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Roy
Workman assisted Mrs. Ayers
as co-hostesses and served
coffee, sandwiches, and sweets
from quaint red and white
checked plates.
Pelham-Bishop
Mr. and Mrs. William Lewis
Pelham, Jr., of 1005 Westview
Drive, Cocoa, Florida, an
nounce the engagment of their
daughter, Martha Lynn, to Mr.
William Ray Bishop, the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Brantley
Bishop of Joanna. Miss Pelham
was graduated from Cocoa High
School and is attending Georgia
College, Milledgeville, Ga. She
made her debut at the Central
Brevard Debutante Society’s
Annual Ball in 1969. She is the
granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Albert Edward Booth of Cocoa,
Mrs. Eugene Newsom Potter
of Rockledge, Florida, and Mr.
William Lewis Pelham, Sr., of
Lakeland, Florida. Mr. Bishop
was graduated from Clinton
High School, and the Georgia
Military College, Milledge
ville, Ga. He is attending
Georgia College at Milledge
ville, and is employed by the
Youth Development Center in
Milledgeville. The wedding will
take place December 28, 1970,
at St Mark’s Episcopal Church,
Cocoa, Florida.

Mrs. Riffs Hosfs Auxiliary
HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL
On Tuesday evening, Octo
ber 20, the American Legion
Auxiliary met at the home of
Mrs. P. M. Pitts.
A group of 6th and 7th grade
girls from the Thornwell Music
Department, under the direc
tion of Miss Luvra McDonald,
presented several musical
selections about South Caro
lina. Mrs. B. F. Wingard, pro
gram chairman, introduced Mr.
William P. Jacobs, chairman of
the Laurens County Tri
centennial Committee. Mr. Ja
cobs discussed dates and places
where many of our events
during Laurens County Tri
con tenniai week will take place,
and gave an informative talk
on the history of Laurens
County.
Handmade bonnets were
modeled by the Thornwell girls.
These bonnets are for sale
and the proceeds will go to
the Laurens County Historical
Perservation Commission.
During the fellowship hour,
the hostesses served delicious
refreshments consisting of as
sorted sandwiches, sweet dan-
ties and hot spiced tea.
Mrs. S. C. Rowe, president,
presided during the business
session.

Newcomen Hold
Monthly Meeting
The Clinton Newcomers Club
held their monthly meeting on
October 21, 1970 at the Epis
copal Parish House. This meet
ing was called to order by the
Club’s President, Mrs. Curtis
Wallace. Business consisted of
coming events. Idears for the
Christmas Bazaar on Novem
ber 14 were shared by the mem
bers. Three sessions were set
up for the members of the club
during the first week In Novem
ber. The Mother’s March was
set tq) for the last week in
January. Seventeen members
were present Two new mem
bers, Mrs. Pete Barber and
Mrs. Roy Wolfe brought the
membership to 31 members.
One visitor, Mrs. Linda Beec-
hum received a warm welcome.
Refreshments of dip, cookies,
chocolate squares and coke
were served. The hostess for
October were Mrs. Mason Noel
and Mrs. James Anderson.
