You can usually remedy the situation by gently stirring the surface of the soup with an ice cube wrapped in a clean doth. How can I soften the leather in a pair of inexpensive shoes? A. Try inserting a couple of scrub bed potatoes in each shoe and letting them stand this way overnight. 0. How can I dean that gummy residue out of ashtrays? A. With denatured alcohol. Q. How can 1 repair a tear in a rubber raincoat? A. Cut a patch out of rubber, roughen the under-surface of the patch and the area around the hole with sandpaper. Apply a thin coat of rub ber cement to both surfaces and let dry. Then apply a second coat to the patch, press on, and smooth down. Q. What can I do when a bottle cap does not seal tightly because the cork or paper insert is missing'’ A. Wrap a piece of string about the neck of the bottk at the bottom of the screw-threads, and the cap will seat on the string to form a good seal. Q. How can I remove varnish stains from fabrics? A.
