When I first heard, the then
democrat, Albert Watson on
radio, I decided if the oppor
tunity was presented I would
support a man of the caliber
he appeared to be, regardless
of his party affiliations. After
faithfully serving the people of
his state, as a democrat, the
Washington party forsook him,
because he followed the dictates
of his conscience, and voted for
Barry Goldwater along with the
majority of the other South
Carolina voters.
To this, his final decision
was rendered in accordance to
a correct saying - *A wise man
sometimes changes his mind,
but a fool never.”
In this period of tumult and
unrest the greatest need in
every State and the nation is
for law and order. Congress
man Watson as a ranking mem
ber of the National Cruise
Committee, is in the know and
with his tenacious loyalty to
duty holds the inner track to
this momumental problem.
The question is will the
shackles, that have bound S.C.
for almost 100 years before this
unprecedented 1970 governors
election, be broken?
The loudest bowlings about
the out of state support of Al
bert Watson for governor are
nothing more than the cries of
desperation of his chief oppo
nents. Don’t think Lt. Gov.
West and Sen. Morris wouldn’t
likewise, accept creditable
support if it were offered them,
even if it came from some
Washington dignitaries, like the
Committee Chairman that came
to S. C. just the other day to
extoll another good democrat
high in political circles and up
for reelection. Of course that
was ok. For John West to
receive the support of his 1968
idol, Hubert Humphrey, the ul
tra liberal co-founder of ADA,
would be accepting poli
tical suicide in S. C.
Among the supporters of
Cong. Watson are such well
known national figures as
Agnew, Thurmond and Ford.
These men of dignity who are
presently in the mainstream of
National politics are in a bet
ter position to assess and eva
luate the overall worth of ano
ther candidate who has reached
such a high political place.
Albert Watson according to
information is, first of all, a
Christian gentlemen. Secondly,
he is an informed honest and
fearless politican who has
reached an envirable plateau
in the service of his state and
nation.
However, all politican’s
service’s should not be judg
ed altogether by time. But ra
ther by the accepted effecti
veness and quality of that ser
vice.

County Council
I believe in and will work for the following:
1. Practical education for our young people.
I believe that it should be the reeponsibUity of
our school systems to train our young people in
those vocations and professions where trained
people are needed here in Laurens County and
thereby keep our young people at home. We
need machanics, carpenters, plumbers, service
people for heating, air conditioning, etc. Local in
dust rv needs trained people for many different
vocations, merchants need trained sales person
nel In order to accomplish this we need good
guidance — counseling service within our school
systems so that our young people’s abilities can
be determined at an early age and they can be
guided into the field where their talents are and
where jobs are available in Laurens County. If
so trained they will then become working, useful,
tax-paying citizens.
2. County-wide water, sewer, garbage dis
posal and fire protection services. Due to lack
of sewer and garbage disposal services there is
now a health hazard in many of the thickly popu
lated areas around the edge of our towns.
3. There are federal funds available in the
form of gifts and low-interest, long-term loans
for all these things and I believe that we should
take advantage of them for aD the things listed
above. It’s our tax dollars the Federal govern
ment is handing out and I want to see Laurens
County get back every dollar we can for the
above projects. If we don’t others will.
Laurens County should be in the Appa
lachian District as are Greenville and Spartan
burg Counties because there is more federal mon
ey available in the /form of gifts when a county
is so classified If Laurens County was Included
In the Appalachian District I believe we would
be able to accomplish the above programs with-
