Club met for a call meeting

for the year were discussed apd

would sell candy to make money
to use at Christmas to do
something for elderly persons
and to have a social. Sixteen
members were present, Miss
Wanda Rock and Mrs. N. A.
Shouse met with the group.

Spivey spent the week-end in
Greenville with their sister,
Mrs. Shirley Owens.
Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Starnes
and children and Mrs. Braxton
Starnes of Kanapolis, N. C.
spent the week-end with Mr.

Campaign
Is Planned
A tremendous opportunity for
the spread of the Word of God
will take place on Sunday, Nov
ember 15, when copies of Good
NEWS FOR MODERN MAN will
be made available to everyone
in the state. This New Testa
ment translation, which is in
modern language that everyone
can understand, is a project
of the State Committee to com
memorate this Tricentennial
Year in South Carolina.
It is hoped that this project
will provide a Bible for every
home, will encourage the read
ing of the Scripture, and will
show forth the work of the Holy
Spirit in meeting the needs of
today.
The local churches and the
Clinton Christian Business
men’s Club are supporting the
distribution of the Bibles in
Laurens County. The prayers
and financial support of every
one will be deeply appreciated
in this most worthwhile pro
ject.

Fine Arts
The Laurens County Fine
Arts Council, at the request of
the Tri-Centennial Committee,
is making arrangements for art
exhibitions in banks, financial
institutions, County Court
house, Clinton City Hall, store
windows, empty buildings and
libraries.
All Laurens County artists
are invited to exhibit drawings,
paintings, photographs, or any
other original works of art.

lace, graduated Cum Laude
from the University of Georgia
in Athens, Ga. He received the
Bachelor of Music degree with
a major in Composition.
He is the grandson of Mrs.
Mac^ Young, Sr. of Clinton.
His mother is the former, Miss
Jenny Young of Clinton.
While at the University, Wal
lace was a member of the
Dixie Redcoat Band, the Uni
versity Brass Ensemble, and
other various student en
sembles. He was a member of
Phi Mu Alpha, and during his
Junior and Senior years was
elected to membership in Pi
Kappa Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi,
and Phi Beta Kappa.
Wallace was the recipient of
a Music Department scholar
ship during his four years at
the University, and was re
cently awarded a Graduate
Assistantshlp In Music Com
position, effective when he re
turns to the University for
graduate study this fall.
Wallace studied trumpet with
Cecil Welch, Calvin Has-
brouck, and Albert Ligotti, and
composition with John Cortna.

Manager For Ascoe
David G. Elliott has been
named Sales Manager for Ascoe
Felts, Inc., according to an
announcement made by Kenneth
E. Fryfogle, president of the
Clinton based firm.
Mr. Elliott has been a Sales
Engineer for Ascoe Felts, Inc.,
covering the states of Ark
ansas, Loulsana, Mississippi
and Texas. In his new manage
ment position his headquarters
will be at the company’s home
office in Clinton.
Mr. Elliott, a native of Ala
bama, received his formal edu
cation at the University of Ala
bama from which he was
graduated in 1959 with a degree
in Chemical Engineering.Since
that he has been associated with
the machine clothing industry
and has been a Sales Re
presentative for wet felts for
the past six years. At the same
time, Mr. Fryfogle announced
that Rudolf F. Van Erkelens
has been appointed Sales Engi
neer for Ascoe Felts, Inc., to
succeed Mr. Elliott in his for
mer territory.

Celebration
Dr. and Mrs, Marshall Brown
visited Lebanon, Tennessee
last week to attend celebra
tions honoring Dr. L. L. Rice
on his 100th birthday. Dr. Rice
was head of Castle Heights
Military Academy when Dr.
Brown graduated there In 1918
and was later president of
Cumberland University at
Lebanon.
When Dr. Rice spoke at a
convocation on October 14th
it was the first time in the
history of American higher
education when a former col
lege president returned to the
campus be served and
eloquently addressed the stu
dent body on his 100th
birthday.
Dr. Rice Is a member of a
distinguished literary family
and he himself has published
ten books and still writ's oc
casionally for magazines. Fol
lowing the morning address of
Dr. Rice, there was a testi
monial banquet where Dr.
Brown was one of the speak
ers paying tribute to this scho
lar and man of letters.
After the Lebanon visit. Dr.
Brown flew to New York for a
conference of U. S. Office of
Education officials and State
Directors of Federal grant pro
grams for college construction
and equipment The conference
was held In the large, new Fed
eral Building In New York,
where a bomb threats have
caused strict security mea
sures. Dr. Brown said that
police even opened the little
case which contained a few
toilet articles and his shaving
kit No explosives were found
and Dr. Brown reported an un
eventful return by plane to
Nashvffie and by auto from
there to Clinton.

Janice Thomassoo of Mount-

a red ribbon last week in the
art exhibit at the Greenwood
County Fair.
A 10th grader at Clinton High
School, she won blue ribbons in
watercolors and cohage and a
red ribbon in pen and ink draw
ing. She is an art student of
Betty Fryga.
