Sanders, pastor; and James Mc- Elhannon, Sunday School director.— (Photo by Eddie McGee) Lydia Church Celebrates 62nd On last Sunday the Lydia baptist Church held a day long celebration of their 62ndbirth day, anniversary. Prior to last Sunday each Chiych and Sunday School member received a birthday candle in the mail. These can dles were brought to Sunday School by each one attending the school and that many cand les were put on a large birth day cake. During the Morning Worship Service the cake was on display in the sanctuary. The six year old Sunday School class, Mrs. Albert Smith, teacher, was one hundred per cent in attendance for both Sunday School and the Morning Worship Hour. Proper recognition was given. The filmstrip showed the church family presenting their thirty pieces of silver for the Annie Armstrong offering for Home Missions. During the Evening Worship Service, Mrs. Clyde Trammell, Baptist Wo men’s Director, read an up to date history of the church. At the conclusion of the Even ing Service, one hundred twenty five members and guests as sembled in the social hall for the birthday party. Three old timers of the church family, Mrs. Henry Abercrombie, Mrs. Alma Harvey and Mrs. Devola Hellams, cut the first slice of the thirty two pound birthday cake. Punch, cake, mints and nuts were served. During her 62 years of minis try Lydia Baptist Church has enjoyed a steady growth. The Annual Associational Church Letter reveals that the church gave more to mission causes last year than any other year during her history, the sum of $2,724.06. There is a total membership of 555, and a Sun day School enrollment of 186. H«nry McGee Has Henry McGee, 12 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mc Gee of Clinton opens his first one-man exhibition of art at the Presbyterian College library Thursday, October 22nd. The exhibit will run through November 5th. The exhibition will be made up largely of drawings of peo ple and their expressions. The exhibition will be open to the public Monday through Thurs day from 8:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday 8:30 a.m. through 5:00p.m. andSun- days, 2:00 p.m. until 10:00p.m. H. L. Penland LAURENS - Hubert L. Pen- land, 49, of Rt. 1, Laurens, Oak Grove community, died Sunday. A lifelong resident of Lau rens County, son of Mrs. Theopa Mobley Penland of Clin ton and the late Andrew J. Pen- land, he was a building-con tractor. He was a member and deacon of Rocky Springs Pres byterian Church and a member of Palmetto Masonic Lodge 19. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Anderson Penland; three daughters, Mrs. Martha De- Vore of Newberry, Mrs. Carolyn Puckett and Mrs. Lucy Crowder of Laurens; two sons, Larry J. and Hubert “Nidde* Penland of Laurens; a sister, Mrs. Jake Rhodes of Clinton; six brothers, James Penland of Clinton, George M., J. C., Dan and Andy Penland of Lau rens and Manley Penland of Aiken; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Rocky Springs Pres byterian Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Goggins CROSS HILL - Mrs. Annie Bell Floyd Coggins, 39, wife of Jesse Goggins of Cross Hill, died Saturday. A member of Zion Hill Bap tist Church, she was a daughter of Olin and Lula Pulley Floyd of Cross Hill. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Jessie Lee Grant, Miss Jessie Bell Goggins, Miss Juliette Goggins, Miss Annie Lucille Goggins, and Miss Luella Goggins of Cross Hill; three sisters, Mrs. Sara Mc- Morrls of Clinton and Mrs. Betty Dandy and Mrs. Tilda Mae Johnson of Cross Hill; four brothers, Otis Floyd of Char lotte, N. C. and John Henry Jessie and Hiliary Floyd of Cross Hill; and three grand children. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Zion Hill Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Teddy Weaver WHITMIRE-Teddy Donald son Weaver, 38-year old re creation director for Whitmire, died Friday in Bailey Memorial Hospital in Clinton after suffer ing a stroke near Clinton. Mr. Weaver had accompanied a group of senior citizens on a mountain trip and they were re turning home when he was stricken near Clinton. Survivors include his wife, his mother, two daughters, his grandmother and two sisters. Funeral services were con ducted Sunday at the First Bap tist Church with burial inWhit- mire Cemetery. Mrs. Toland Mrs. Jimmie Lee Toland of 503 Gary St, died Friday. She was a daughter of the late Charlie and Amanda Sub- er Dobbins and was a member of Mount Olive AME Church in Newberry. Surviving is a brother, Geo rge Dobbins of Clinton. Funeral services were held Sunday at Mount Olive AME Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Weisner LANCASTER - Mrs. Jannie Edna Weisner, 59, of Route 3, Lancaster, died Wednesday, October 14. She was a sister of Mrs. Mary Price of Clinton. Other survivors include her husband, a son, two daughters, another sister. Funeral services were held Friday at St Luke’s United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Faulkner ABBEVILLE - Mrs. AUie Smith Fant Faulkner, 81, of 113 Hickory Heights, died Satur day at Valdosta, Ga. She was the stepmother of Mrs. Alice White of Clinton. Other survivors include her husband, a son, a daughter, a sister, another stepdaughter. Funeral services were con ducted Sunday at Harris Fun eral Home with burial in Donalds Baptist Church Ceme tery. Mrs. Davis Funeral services for Mrs. Lucia Mills Davis will be held today, October 22, at HIbbert and Waters Funeral Home, W. Gregory Street, Pensacola, Florida. Mrs. Davis died Sun day in Wichita, Kansas. She was the mother of Kenneth D. Mills of Lugoff, a former resident of Clinton. Mrs. Neese ANDERSON - Mrs. Sue Brown Neese, 51, of 624 Mar tha Drive, died Friday. She was a sister of Miss Betty Brown of Clinton. Other survivors include her husband, a daughter, four bro thers and three other sisters. Funeral services were held Sunday at McDouglad’s South Chapel with burial in Sardis Baptist Church cemetary in Hartwell. Miss Abrams In Sorority NEWBERRY - Martha Ab rams, Joanna freshman at Newberry College, has pledged Alpha XI Delta sorority dur ing the fall rush period of the Greek organizations cm the campus. Miss Abrams is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Abrams, Joanna. Missionary To Spoak Sunday At Davidson St. The Rev. James O. Watson, Baptist Missionary now on fur lough from Paraguay, South America and former pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Clin ton, will be the guest speaker for the Eleventh Anniversary Day occasion at Davidson Street Baptist Church Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. M. Floyd Hellams, pastor of the Chuch on behalf of the members, extends an in vitation to the friends and for mer members to attend the special anniversary day ser vices. Sunday School will began at 10:00 a.m. andMoraingWor- ship at 11:00 a.m. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. An after noon service beginning at 1:45 will include the Calvary Baptist Church Bell Choir under dir ection of Mrs. Eva Land and guest singers, Mr. and Mrs. D. Eugene Brown, Mrs. Alva Mahares, A. B. Galloway and Deany Martin. The former pas tor, Rev. Clyde Peterson; the mother church’s pastor, Rev. J. w. Spillers, charter mem bers, and ministers licensed or ordained by the church will also participate in the afternoon service. The Davidson Street Church began as a mission in October, 1959 in a one-unit structure. Two additional units were added in 1960, and a 485-seat audi torium and two-story educa tional building were dedicated March 5, 1967. A modern kitchen was added to the social hall in 1968. Four men now serving as ministers were either licensed or ordained by the church: Copeland Whitmire and Shannon Long 1961, Bill Quarles 1966 and Jack Carr 1970. John Stansell, a licensed minister is a mem ber; David Cromer, pastor in Pamplico, was approved as a ministerial student by the church In 1962. Present membership is 334.
