Pearman S30/3c/O21 cf * / * FW AL SETTLEMENT United Prayer Avails Much More BY DR. HERBERT SPA UGH There is no limit to what can be accomplished by prayer. Thousands will agree on that. The Bible tells us in the Book at James that "the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” '‘ If individual prayer right eous man avails much, the united prayer of a righteous grow avails much more. Jesus said, ‘If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in Heaven. F or where two or three are gathered to gether inMy name, there am I in the midst of them”. (Mat thew 18-19.) A striking illustration of this was related recently in Char lotte by Dr. Billy Graham in his sermon at the funeral of T.W. WUson, Sr., a dedicated Christian layman of great prayer-power. Some years ago Wilson was selected as ‘North Carolina Father of the Year." There is no question about his deserving the title. Read below. According to Dr. Graham, when he was a boy his father, W. Frank Graham and close friend, T.W. Wilson, met for prayer with a small group of dedicated Christian laymen in a quiet spot on the Wilson farm. The burden of their prayer was that the Lord would call out of Charlotte some dedicated young men who would go out Into the world to preach the gospel with power. Dr. Graham listed four men who went into the ministry as a result of that prayer meeting. Three of Wilson’s sons, the Rev. Grady Wilson, The Rev. T.W. Wilson, Jr., The Rev. Da vid Wilson. And then Dr. Gra ham modestly added, ‘And I am the fourth in that group*. Three of these men are a part of the Billy Graham team - Dr. Graham himself and two of the Wilson brothers, Grady . WUson and T.W. WUson. Add * to the Graham group another member of the team, the Rev. Leighton Ford who married BiUy Graham’s sister. Now do a little figuring for yourself about the results of that farm prayer meeting. In the history of the church there has been nothing like the Graham crusade in reaching miUions of people for God, and Jesus Christ. It is my conviction there is no greater blessing which can come to man that to have been reared in a godly and loving Christian home. The Graham team came largely out of two godly, Christian homes where they were literaUy prayed into the ministry. And, may I add my personal testimony. It is my privUege to have been reared in a godly and lovingChristian home from which I too was prayed into the ministry in spite of my re luctance. Prayer is not obsolete. It is still a tremendous and vital force. The sooner we learn that, the sooner we’U find the solution to our problems. Amen. These Christians meet for worship and are organized into local congregations. They are neither Catholic nor Protestant. They belong to no denomination. They have no central govern ment nor earthly headquarters. Each congrega tion is independent, taking the New Testament as its sole and only authority in religion. The members insist that if we believe the same things the early Christians believed and do the same things they did, it will make us the same things they were. Paul was a member of no denomina tion, yet he was a Christian and a member of the Lord’s church. The church of Christ was established on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Christ, as we read in Acts, chapter two. Every saved person was added to the church. (Acts 2:47) The church is composed of all Christians on earth. The members or disciples were called “Chris tians.” (Acts 11:26) The Lord gave this name. (Isaiah 62:2) Human names are condemned. (1 Cor. 1:11-13; Acts 4:12) The word of God is the seed of the kingdom, (lie. 8:11) This seed produced Christians when first planted. If we plant the same seed touay, we will reap the same harvest. The life is in the seed. If there were not a Christian on earth to day, you could become one by believing in Christ as the Son of God, repenting, confessing your faith in Christ, and being baptized. If there were not a Church of Christ, we could start one by obeying the gospel of Christ. Paul went to Cor inth and preached the gospel. “Many of the Co rinthians, hearing, believed, and were baptized.” (Acts 18:8) Paul later addressed them as the “church of God” and “the body of Christ.” (1 Cor. 1:2; 12:27) Nineteen centuries have passed since the be ginning of the church, but we still have the same truth. We h*ve today the same church unchang ed in name, doctrine, organization, faith and practice. We dare not use any creed except the New Testament. (2 Jon. 9-11) We must not add to our worship any doctrine or commandment of man. (Matt. 16:9) Our plea is for unity—not during a so-called union meeting — but for all time on the platform given in God’s word. (Eptu 4:3-6) We plead no merit of our own, only the merit of Christ’s shed blood and His holy word. The New Testament is the Worxi of God, and is superior to any human creed or confession of faith. (Tim. 8:16-17). Will you not do what the Lord commands that we do to be saved, let Him add to His Church. (Acts 4:27) and stand with us on the solid rock of God’s Word? It is unlawful foi any person having possession or control of any horse, pony or goat to ride, lead, drive, or allow such animal to stray or run at large upon any side walk or walkway within the City of Clinton. Section 2. Any person guilty of violating this ordinance shall be punished by a fine of not less than Ten Dollars nor more than One Hundred Dollars or by imprisonment for a period not exceeding thirty days. Section 3. This Ordinance shall be effective on and after the 19th day of October, 1970. As soon as you see her you should be able to determine the kind of person she is. If she seems rather constrained or formal, offer her a friendly hand.
