The Ushers Union was held
at Little River Zion Baptist
Church on Sunday afternoon.
After a welcome by Mr. Lu-
wash Cannon and a response by
Mr. Charles Rice the member
choirs sang.
Mr. Henry Price is presi
dent and Mrs. Lillie B. Sturkey
is secretary. Rev. James Gray
is pastor at the Church. The
next meeting will be at Conell
Baptist Church, Joanna, S. C.
The initial sermon of Mr.
John H. Grant was delivered
on Sunday afternoon at Bethel
Baptist Church in Cross Hill.
He used as a text St. Matthew
13: 20-21. He chose 'Standing
Up With the Lord* as a sub
ject Rev. W. E. Byrd, the host
pastor presided during the ser
vice.
YOUTH DAY
Youth Day was held at
Vaughnville Baptist Church in
Chappells on Sunday, October
11. Following a welcome Miss
Brenda Gilliam responded.
Miss Lois Gilliam of Pied
mont was the guest speaker.
Her subject was Youth of To
day.
Rev. Bell of Spartanburg,
delivered a very inspiring ser
mon.
Rev. Gordon is pastor of the
church.
Mrs. Jeanette Bell, Larcell
Jr. and Elizabeth and Miss
Debra Jenkins spent the past
week-end in Washington, D.C.
and Maryland with Mr. and Mrs.
John Tribble and Mr. and Mrs.
J. J. Jenkins.
Mr. and Mrs. Casey Wilson
spent the past week-end in
Soperton, Georgia, with Mr.
and Mrs. Delmus Gillis.
Miss Selma Smith a sopho
more at S. C. State College
spent the week-end with her
mother, Mrs. Rubye Smith and
other family members.
Mrs. Florence Jenkins is
spending sometime in New
York City with her sisters.
Mr. George Kell Kinard left
the city recently for Washing
ton, D. C. where he will reside.
Miss Mary Watts a freshman
at Benedict College spent the
week-end with her parents Mr.
and Mrs. Jesse F. Watts on
Horne Street.
Miss Brenda Gilliam and
Miss Jessie Mae Johnson stu
dents at S. C. State College
spent the week-end with their
parents and other relatives.
Mrs. Elnora Summers, local
beautician, attended the State
Cosmetologist Board Meeting
on Sunday. The meeting was
held at the Beautician Home in
Columbia, S. C.
SCOUT LEADERS WANTED

21 years of age or older and
would like to help promote
scouting in this area for Boy
Scout Troop 178, is asked to
meet at Friendship A.M.E.
Church Sunday at 3:30 p.m. for
more information. However
please keep in mind this is a
non profitable organization
trying to help develop young

You may be at the age when
you'd rather not count your
birthdays--but it’s to your de
finite advantage to remember
your birth date insofar as your
South Carolina Driver’s Lic
ense is concerned.
Since July 10 of this year
when the Highway Department
began its record keeping on the
subject, more than 2,200 dri
vers in the state have had to
take a complete driver exami
nation because they let their
birthdate slip by without re
newing their drivers licenses.
The exact number is 2,225
through October 5.
A driver’s license expires
on the holder’s birthday in the
fourth calendar year after it
has been issued to him. If he
has it renewed before the ex
piration date, he has only to
submit to an eye test in order
to have his license renewed.
If he waits until the license
has expired, he then must take
the complete driver examin
ation, written and road tests,
just as if he had never had a
license, according to the High
way Department driver licens
ing officials.
