Mattie P. Cannon Guardian November 5,1970 01-C4-022 T^GT. BRYANT Bryant Completes Course Technical Sergeant Guy O. Bryant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther J. Bryant, 309 Reynolds Avenue, Greenwood, has com pleted the special U. S. Air Force recruiter course at Lackland AFB, Texas. Sergeant Bryant, previously assigned at Fairchild AFB, Wash., will be an official Air Force recruiter at Clinton. He was picked for the special as signment as a volunteer with an outstanding military record. The sergeant was trained in 11 areas of study, including the Air Force job classification system, testing procedures and community relations to broaden his qualifications for presenting the facts of Air Force career opportunities to young men and women. The sergeant has completed a tour of duty in Vietnam and also served during the Cuban Crisis. Sergeant Bryant is a 1953 graduate of Greenwood High school. His wife , Doris, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cla rence Sheriff, Anderson. Cotton textile imports have been regulated bv a type of voluntary restraint since 1961, but textile prices have been af fected very little by the sys tem. The wholesale price index for cotton textile products in 1969 was only one-tenth ofaper cent higher than in 1960, the year before the trade agreement was reached, U. S. Department of Labor statistics show. West Clinton BY MRS. CLIFTON HEATON Mr. and Mrs. Gene Floyd and children of Greenwood were Saturday supper guests of Mrs. Annie Mae Caughman. Miss Lynn Garner of Balti more, Maryland is spending this week with Miss Emily Shelton. Mr. and Mrs. Authur Sanders visited their son and daughter- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Mike San ders and daughter in Greenwood Sunday. Saturday guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Windsor were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Duncan and child ren of Charleston. Private Larry Owen of Fort Jackson spent the week-end with his wife, Mrs. Dianne Owen. Mrs. Georgia Trammell and Mrs. Darris Fay Todd spent the week-end at Lyons, Georgia with Mrs. Trammell’s brother, Mr. and Mrs. Cony Farrow. Last Friday night Rev. and Mrs. J. Furman Entrekin and children, Mark and Faith, visit ed their neice, TonaRaye White who is a patient at the Medical Center in Charleston. Rev. and Mrs. J. Furman Entrekin and family attended the afternoon services at the Iva Penticostal Holiness Church in Iva, Sunday. They recognized former pastors of the church and Rev. Entrekin was a former pastor there. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hughes were supper guests Friday of Rev. and Mrs. James Hughes and family at Gray Court. Ricky Frady of Kinards spent a few days last week with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walt McAlister. Visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bearden on Sunday was his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Boyce Bearden of Woodruff and also her sister, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Yarbrough of Enoree. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Leopard visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Leopard, who are ill at their home near Saluda. Among those visiting Mr. and Mrs. George Leopard on Sim- day also included Mr. and Mrs. Albert Griffith of ChappeUs; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Maffett and Mr. and Mrs. Washington Leo pard of Ninety-Six; and Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Butler and family and Mrs. Kathleen Butler and Linda of near Saluda and also three other grandchildren and their families of Saluda and Greenwood. WITH THE SICK Mrs. Mattie Vee Heaton is a patient at Bailey Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Glenda Dominick and daughters, Willette and Penny Dale, were sick with the flu last week. Among patients at Bailey Memorial Hospital are Mrs. Ott Thomas, David Owens and Jack Redd. Mrs. Estess Bible has re turned home after undergoing surgery last week at Laurens Hospital. Clifton Heaton Sr. has been ill at his home. CLASS MEETING The Dorcas Bible Class of Calvary Baptist Church held its monthly meeting on Tuesday night, September 22. The meeting was opened with prayer by Willie Mae Riley. Mrs. Traynum was in charge of the installation of new of ficers. Those elected were teacher - Mrs. Beatrice Hard man; assist teacher - Mrs. Eva West; treasurer - Mrs. Ann Trammell; president - Mrs. Edna Traynum; vlce-president- Mrs. Irene Adams; secretary - Mrs. Ada Bell Hughes; assist secretary - Mrs. Leo Heath- erly; group captains - Mrs. Irish Cagle and Mrs. Ruth Leo pard. After the business session was over everyone enjoyed a nice covered dish supper. The meeting was closed with prayer by Mrs. Traynum. BIRTHDAY DINNER Thursday night a birthday dinner was held in honor of BUI McLendon at their home on the Spartanburg Highway. Those present for the occa sion were Mr. and Mrs. Mc Lendon, Mr. and Mrs. Furman Adams and son, Billy and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Boyce and sons. BIRTHDAY DINNER Hubert Leopard of this city was honored with a birthday dinner on Sunday at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. CaroU Fulmer at Johnston. Those present for the occa sion included Mr. and Mrs. Hu bert Leopard and Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Heaton and children of Clinton; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Der rick and son, Ronnie of Pros perity; and Mr. and Mrs. Car- roll Fulmer and chUdren, Bar bara and Dale of Johnston. BIRTHDAY PARTY On Saturday afternoon Rickey Alexander, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Alexander of Joanna, was given a party in honor of his 3rd birthday at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Norris, on Tillman Circle in Joanna. Party favors were given each child as they arrived. Games and refreshments were enjoyed by the large number of boys and girls present. Rickey received many nice gifts. Labor Department. * * * Pest 56 To Meet Monday Copeland-Davidson Post 56 American Legion, will meet Monday, October 5, at 7 p.m. Instead of the usual time. Mem bers are urged to bring any Vietnam veterans they know. The speaker will be Lt. Col. Benjamin Ivey, who recenUy returned from Vietnam and is now retired. A hamburger supper will be served, dutch to the members and free for the guests. All members are asked to attend. Mmebers attending will have a chance at the door prize. * * * County Road Contract Awarded Award of a $216,063 contract for 6.8 miles of state secon dary system road construction in Laurens County was announc ed today by the State Highway Department Hunter Brothers, Inc. of Gray Court was awarded the con tract on the basis of the firm’s low bid, according to Chief Highway Commissioner Silas N. Pearman. Three bids were entered ranging ashighas$253, 997. The contract calls for grading and bituminous surfacing of 5.4 miles on secondary road S-53, S-365 and S-46 from the U. S. 76 by-pass in Laurens near Watts Mill easterly across the Clinton, Newberry and Laurens Railroad to near Mt Vernon Church and southeasterly from that point to the CN A L Rail road near Clinton. The project includes the grading and bituminous surfac ing of 0.8 mile on road S-662 adjacent to road S-42near Lau rens; 0.1 mile on road S-664 from road S-483 southeasterly; O. 3 miles on road S-666 from road S-46 westerly; and of 0. 05 mile on road S-158, being a street at Joanna.
