Many commercial egg men
are overlooking the Importance
of the lighting program,* Wal
ker says, “and are losing egg
production as a result.*
Those with mature hens on
less than an 18-hour day are ad
vised to put them on the sche
dule now. “The best way to do
this with hens in production for
some time is by increasing the
length one hour immediately,
then step up another 15 minutes
a day until hitting the 18-hour
mark,* Walker says.
But it doesn’t help to go be
yond 18 hours, in most cases.
One exception maybe with birds
that have been on the constant
18-hour day and have experienc
ed lower egg production because
of health problems.
“In this case, all-night lights
in some instances have been
beneficial in attemps to bring
up egg production,* Walker
says.
To get best performance
under the lighting program, he
advises using them morningand
evening to split the total time
of artificial lights.
The use of dimmers in cut
ting lights off is also suggested
because “this results in their
going off closer to the way na
ture does it.*
South Carolina textile plants
consumed nearly three billion
pounds of cotton and synthetic
fibers in 1969, according to the
S. C. Department of Labor.

Here’s a superb entree-in-a-skillet for summer days:
Coq Am Perlettes
1 cup Perlette or Thompson 4 chicken legs, disjointed
seedless green grapes
2 large peaches, skinned and
halved
Vi cup dry white wine
1 teaspoon sugar
2 tablespoona flour
1 teaspoon salt
Vi teaspoon paprika
Vi teaspoon ground ginger*
3 tablespoons salad oil
Vi clove garlic, peeled
Marinate grapes and peach halves in wine and sugar in bowl.
Combine flour, salt, paprika and ginger; roll chicken in mix
ture. Place oil and garlic in skillet. Heat oil; discard garlic.
Place chicken in skillet; brown very slowly on both aides. Drain
marinade from fruit into skillet. Cover tightly; simmer until
chicken is tender, about 10 minutes. Add fruit and cook un
covered until fruit is hot, about 5 minutes. Yield: 4 servings.
•One teaspoon grated fresh ginger root can be substituted by
adding to marinade.
