Peter Moon was guest minister at Salem Baptist Church, Abbeville County on Sunday morning. During the morning service five persons were baptized and six were wel- combed as members in thf church. Mrs. Rubye M. Grant enter tained the members of her Sun day School class of Friendship A ME Church on last Sunday at 4 o’clock at her home on South Bell Street. After playing games and sing ing songs, the hostess served ice cream and cookies. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Dendy and niece Mrs. Nyless Mack of Washington, D. C. spent the week-end with their cousin, Mrs. Lois B. Young and 'dau ghter, Loretta on 206 North Bell Street. On Sunday, they visited relatives in Newberry. Mr. Cleveland James Miller of Jamacia, N. Y. spent the La bor Day week-end with his mo ther, Mrs. Lillie M. Davis and other family members. Bennie Miller who had spent the sum mer vacation with his relatives accompanied his uncle home. Mrs. Cora Lee Dunlap of Brooklyn, N. Y. is visiting her sister, Mrs. Virginia Moore and other family members. Mr. James'Pee Wee* Young has returned home after a pro longed hospital stay in the Vet eran’s Hospital, Augusta, Ga. He is to return to the hospital on September 20. Miss Bethsheba Watts left Thursday for S. C. Area Trade School in Denmark, S. C. Mrs. Anna Simpson has re turned to her home on South Bell Street after a stay in Self Memorial Hospital. Miss Roslyn Goode and Mr. Nathaniel Smith of Atlanta, Ga. spent Sunday with her mother, Mrs. Lillie G, Greer. Mrs. Bannah Adams and San dra spent the past week-end in North Augusta, S. C. with Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Coleman. Miss Joyce Williams is a student at Greenwood Tech. Mr. James Harley, Jr. is enrolled as a third year stu dent at Allen University, Col umbia, S. C. Miss Shirley Young will leave today for Durham Business Col lege where she will enter upon her second year of study. Miss Bertha Cotton will leave on Sunday to enter her sopho more year at Morris College, Sumter, S. C. Mrs. Lula M. Rice of the Gideon Hill section observed a birthday on September 6. Rev. James Gray of Gray Court, and Mrs. Lillie Hill of Baltimore, Maryland attended the Wheeler-Richard wedding on Rose Hill Drive on Satur day. Mr. and Mrs. George Mc- Morris and Mr. and Mrs. Her man Williams spent Labor Day at Maggie Valley, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. Garrett Bry son, former residents of Mount- vllle are now residing on South Livingston Street in our city. They are extended a warm welcome to our m mmunitv life. Mr. and Mrs. George Ralph Lindsay and son are residing in Columbia, S. C. Mr. Lindsay is a student at Allen University and Mrs. Lindsay (Josetta H.) is enrolled at Benedict College. Miss Jessie Mae Johnson has entered ", C. State College, Orangeburg where she is a member of the freshman class. VOWS SPOKEN At four o’clock in the after noon on Saturday Sept. 5, Miss Phyllis Diane Wheeler of Lau rens, became the bride of Mr. Johnny C. Richard of Clinton. The ceremony was performed at the home of the groom’s par ents on Rose Hill Drive. Rev. W. L. Hunter was the officiating minister. The bride wore a midi-length white gown. She carried a lovely bridal bouquet. Miss Lillie Wheeler was maid of honor and bridesmaid was Miss Helen Workman both of Laurens. Mr. Jesse Richard, the groom's brother was best man. The living room and dining room was decorated with pink and white gladiolas. A reception was held immediately following the ceremony. The bride the daughter of Mrs. Lillie Hill of Baltimore, Maryland is a graduate of San ders High School. The groom, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Richard is a graduate of Bell Street High School and is employed at Tor- rington Bearing Plant. The couple is residing on Hunter’s Court in Laurens. Miss Werts Receives Degree Miss Mary Helen Werts, for merly of Clinton was among the Jime 1970 graduates of Atlanta versify who received the t«r Social Work degree. . June She attended Bell Street High School and holds the Bachelor of Arts degree from Benedict Col lege. During her two years of study at Atlanta University, Miss Werts received her field train ing at the Atlanta University Social Service Center and the Gainesville Florida Veterans Administration Hospital. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Delta National Sociology Honor So ciety and the National Associa tion of Social Workers. Presently, Miss Werts isem- ployed as a psychiatric social worker in Columbia, S. C. During the years 1961-69, employment gains by Negroes were more rapid than those for whites. Negroes increased their employment ranks by 1.6 million, or 23 percent, while whites increased theirs by only 8 percent.
