Lanford and Miss Elizabeth Russell, while here they spent a few days at Myrtle Beach. Their daughter, Miss Gloria Sweat, also of Nashville, spent a few days re cently with the Lanfords and Mrs. Russell. She made her trip by air. Marvin Bridges is spending a leave with his wife and family and other relatives and friends. He was in Vietnam for a years tour of duty. Foil owing his leave he will be at Furman Univer sity with the ROTC in Green ville. Mrs. Cleo Templeton re turned on Saturday from Char lotte, N. C. after spending two weeks with Mrs. 0. C. Earney. L. Simpson. Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Waits enjoyed the week-end at the Isle of Palms. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Lind say and Susan visited the for mers father in Honea Path on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Pitts of Greer visited Mrs. Cancie Brown and Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Elliott on Sunday. Mrs. Nora Boyce returned on August 30 after spending three weeks with her son and family, T/Sgt. and Mrs. Kenneth Boyce, Keith, Kimberly and Kandice, in Abeline, Texas. While there she visited Six Flags over Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Andy Gosnell spent the week-end in Spart anburg with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Melton. Beth, Scott and Kim. The latter had just been in the hospital for a ton- silectomy. Mrs. Ruth Thomas and Mrs. Hazel Moore were week-end guests of their mother, Mrs. W. E. Adams in Columbia. On Saturday evening they attended the Lawrence Welk show which was held at the Columbia Col- osium. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Rogers of Fair Bluff, N. C. spent last week-end with Mr. and Mrs. James G. Miller. While here they also visited Mr. Roger Miller and Sonya and Mrs. Mil ler who is a patient at Green ville General Hospital. Little Sonya also spent the week-end with the Millers. SPECIAL TRAINING Seaman 1st Class Charlie Lollis of Norfolk, Va. spent the Labor day week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Lollis. He has just completed eight weeks special training at Baimbridge, Maryland. BIRTHDAY DINNER Mr. and Mrs. George Metts honored their daughter, Carolyn with a birthday dinner on Sun day, Sept. 6. Caro lyn who was 15, was remember ed with gifts. SSgt. Joseph Chalk son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Chalk of Joanna recently completed a seven week course in Manage ment for Air Force Supervisors at Elgin AFB, Florida. Sgt Chalk is assigned to the 3201st Security Police Squadron at El gin. Sgt. Chalk entered the ser vice in 1962 and arrived at El gin in May from BienHoaAFB, Viet Nam. Sgt. Chalk spent al most 4 years in Viet Nam on seven different tours of duty and received 13 decorations and awards while there. Eric Chalk was honored with a birthday party on Saturday, August 22 at the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Thomas Chalk of Joanna. About 17 child ren joined Eric in celebrating his 5th birthday. He received many playful and nice gifts. Assisting Mrs. Chalk was Mrs. Ginger Chalk of Sumter, S. C. SMSGT and Mrs. GeneHaup- fear and family left for Wood- bridge, Va. on July 15th after spending 30 days leave with relatives in Joanna and Clin ton. They recently completed a three year tour in Hawaii and Sgt. Haupfear will be sta tioned in Va. for two years after which he will retire from the Air Force, Sgt Haupfear will have 25 years service. Their son Johnny returned home on August 17th after spending the summer holidays with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Chalk of Joanna and Mr. and Mrs. James Haupfear of Clinton. Sgt. Haupfear and family will make their home in Clinton on his retirement from service. Sgt. Bruce Chalk was pro moted to that rank on August 1st in the United States Air Force, He is married to the former Ginger Tucker, daught er of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Tuck er Jr. of Joanna. Sgt. Chalk is the son ofMr. and Mrs. Thomas Chalk of Joanna. Sgt. and Mrs. Chalk reside at 230 Miller Arms Apts, in Sumter, S. C. ATTENDED JAMBOREE Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Lollis, Mr. and Mrs. Doug Lollis and Debbie and Mr. and Mrs. Hu bert Lindsay and Susan were among the ones to attend the Greenville News - Piedmont Jamboree at the Greenville Me morial Auditorium last Sunday. WITH THE SICK Miss Eva Watts is a patient at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood due to a broken hip. Jack Bridges broke his arm recently at football practice. Mrs. J. M. Bozard entered Bailey Memorial Hospital on Monday. Mrs. Carrie Jacks is a pat ient at the local hospital. Mr. T. G. Murphy entered the hospital last Saturday. ATTENDS FUNERAL Mr. and Mrs. Houston May and family attended the funeral of the formers mother, Mrs. Annie May, last Tuesday in Manchester, Tennessee. Sym pathy is extended to them. SENIOR CITIZENS MEET The Senior Citizens meeting OX POWER—What in the jet age?! Yea, this is an ox, and it is in Laurens County. L. A. Dickson of Clinton says he can get his work done and make money growing out oxen. Mr. Dickson has quite a large garden, and he keeps it clean with the ox. He has unusual vegetables, as well as the usual. You can see in the background he has a new, mod ern home. Mr Dickson can be re membered as a brother to Pat Dick son, who for years managed the Workman Farm in the Hopewell Community. The big ox is estimat ed to weigh about 1700 pounds, and according to Mr. Dickson, the ox has to rest now and then during the hot weather. However, Mr. Dickson, be ing 72 years old, says that he and the ox go at about the same pace! will be held on September 15 at 10 a.m. at the Joanna Clubhouse. Each one is to bring a covered dish for the dinner. Come and enjoy the get-together. BIRTHDAYS ANNIVERSARIES On Sept. 8, Scott Melton was four years old.
