n THE CHRONICLE, Clinton, S. C., Sept. 10, 1970—1-C Corley Is Named Eastern Flight Officer Ronald David Corley, son ot Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Corley of 307 Caldwell Street, Clinton, has joined Eastern Airlines as flight officer. Mr. Corley graduated from Clinton High School and from Presbyterian College, Clinton. He learned to fly in 1964 while serving in the United States Marine Corps, in Pensacola, Florida. He is married and has two children. Mr. Corley will be based in Atlanta. From there he will fly to many of the more than 100 cities Eastern serves in 29 states coast to coast, the Dis trict of Columbia, Canada, Mex ico, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Ja maica, the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands. Jack Ferguson Interns In Senator’s Office John R. Ferguson, son of Mrs. R. E. Ferguson, Jr. of Clinton, recently completed his internship in the Washington of fice of Senator Strom Thurmond (R-SC). The intern program is designed for young people who are interested in obtaining a better understanding and know ledge of the structure and the machinery of our government system. When asked what he consid ered to be the most outstanding facet of Senator Thurmond’s in tern pr'gram, Jack responded, “Senator Thurmond readily gave his permission for us to see all kinds of fascinating events that we otherwise would have missed. Because of this, we got to leave our office dut ies to attend a reception at the White House for the Congolese President, a movie screening where we met Astronaut Mike Collins, and a very close ABM vote.* other things Jack enjoyed were tours of the Capitol area, attending the Senate Prayer Breakfast, sitting in on a num ber of hearings, and hearing statements by a number of Sena tors on the Senate floor. Senator Thurmond commend ed Jack on his outstanding per formance as an intern and said, “I have always had great re spect for South Carolina’s fine young people. It reaffirms mv faith in the future of this country to work with such intelligent ".nd dedicated Americans as Jack.’ Jack is a rising junior at Duke University, where he is majoring in political science. Miss Boyce Wins Grant Martha Jane Boyce of Cross Hill is fme of 24 upperclassmen at Newberry College who have received President’s Scholar ships for the 1970-71 school term. The scholarships may be re newed annually if the student maintains a ’B* average. American Red Cross Miss Newberry. at The Laurens County Chap ter, American Red Cross, agency in your United Fund, gives the county assurance of all aid should a disaster strike the area. Laurens County has been fortunate not to have a major disaster requiring aid. When Hurricane Camille struck the Gulf Coast and W. Virginia last year, Laurens County Chapter was able to send its quota in the amount of nearly $1,900, by special gifts from the United Fund of the county. Again this year, Laurens County Chapter has been given a quota of $679 to give as sistance to the areas hit by hurricanes. The Red Cross offers aid training to members of the Laurens County Rescue Squad and also offers instruction to those currently holding Ad vanced First Aid Certificates who are interested in becom ing First Aid Instructors. The local chapter, with of fices located in the Court House Laurens, handles many claims of veterans and their depend ents for pension, compansation and many other Veterans Ad ministration benefits. Through these services thousands of dollars return to Laurens County veterans and their dependents each year. Every effort is being made by American Red Cross to as sist veterans returning home to establish jobs, homes and ed ucation to help them adjust to civilian life again. Tricentennial Commemorative Stamp* and al so featuring a silhouette des- signed by noted low - country artist, Carew Rice. The cachets go on sale September 12, the first day of issue for the commemora tive stamp, and remain on sale until the supply is exhausted. The Carew Rice design feat ures a ship framed by a moss drapped oak tree, depicting the landing of the Carolina at Char les Towne in 1670. Charleston, S. C., will be the only city in the nation where the “S. C. Tricentennial Com memorative Stamp" can be ob tained on the first day of issue. To obtain a first day cover the following procedure should be followed. Cover collectors must sub mit legibly addressed envelopes to the Postmaster, Charleston, S. C., 29401, with remittance to cover the value of the post age to be affixed. The first- class rate, six cents (6£) do mestic, thirteen (130 foreign, applys to first day covers. The Post Office Department does not prepare of sell first day covers. Order for mint (uncanceled) stamps should not be ordered with requests for covers. Mint stamps should be purchased at the local post office.
