HERBERT SPAUGH Are you one of those self- sufficient persons who feels that he can manage his own life without God? If so, then look out-you’re riding for a fall. Don’t you remember the old proverb: “Pride goeth be fore destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall,” or the admonition in the Good Book: “Let him thatthinkethhestand- eth take heed lest he fall”? The age of sophistication is on the way out. Man has out smarted himself. When he smashed the atom he faced him self with the choice of either learning to live at peace with his God and his fellowmen, else be destroyed by his own smart ness. Some of you'Will remember that childhood poem, “Twinkle twinkle, little star. How I won der what you are. Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky.* The late Dr. Peter Marshall, chaplain of the United States Senate, had a parody on this little poem which expresses the attitude of the modern sophis ticate: “Twinkle, twinkle, giant star. I know exactly you are. An incandescent ball of gas, Condensing to a solid mass. “Twinkle, twinkle, giant star. I need not wonder what you are. For seen by spectroscopic lens, You’r helium and hydrogen.* There are still people who think it is smart to poke fun at religion as being old- fashioned. As a matter of fact, they are the ones who are old- fashioned. There is a rising new era of, spiritual achievement. Men have been putting out their best energy in laboratories and fac tories. Now the turn is towards spiritual truth. It’s a turning point of desperation. For if we do not bring man's-^spiri- tual life up to the level of his physical achievements, we will all be destroyed in one great conflagration. Be up-to-date, and not old- fashioned. Get In step with the on-going movement of spiritual achievement. Explore your Bible. Dig out the spiritual truths there. Get a copy of the “Precious Promises New Test ament.* Read and claim the promises. Make them and apply them to your own life. Those divine promises will make you cry out to the questions, “Who is sufficient for these things... What then shall we say to these things? If God be with us, who can be against us?* In partnership with Him, and with a working knowledge of spiritual truth as set forth in the Bible, we become one of theose who wear the “new look* of serenity, peace, and God-sufficiency which char acterizes the manner and ap pearance of those who know and live in the presence of their Lord.
