TIPS FROM CLEMSON
HOMS Mi
(EDITOR’S NOTE: Informa

Q. Roaches and waterbugs
are a big problem, mostly a-
round the sink. We’ve used a
number of commercial mat
erials but they don’t help. The
bugs seem to like them. Any
suggestions? E.A.E., Trave
lers Rest.
A. There are many chemical
in our roach-eradication ar
senal, but the pests have be
come residtanttosomeofthem.
For instance, German roaches,
or waterbugs, are resistant to
Chlordane and Die! dr In but
these materials are still ef*
fective against the larger
roaches.
For your problem, try some
materials which contain Diax-
inion, DDVP or Malathion. Dir
ections are on the container.
Kepone bait andboric acid, used
by exterminators, are also
available at many garden sig>ply
stores. Follow all safety rules
with these materials, and be
especially sure not to expose
unused portions to children or
pets.--W. C. Nettles, principal
extension specialist, en
tomology and plant pathology.
Q. Enclosed is a sample from
one of our boxwoods. Several
are infected with the same
disease. What is it?
Greenville.
A. Many samples similar to
those you submitted come in
during extremely hot, dry per
iods. No primary tungi were
present on the sample, but I
have seen it with plans that
seem to have been lntbe*plnk*
of health. Prune oat the dead
parts and see if the plants
don't survive if they have fav
orable growing conditions.—W.
C. Nettles.
Q. Large black ants are eat
ing holes ir i roots and trunks
ire also holes in the ground
about an inch In diameter. What
will control the ants? L.S.M.
Greenville.
A. It's those black ants a-
gain! This should have been
called the year of the black
carpenter ants. Since lest win
ter they have been at the top
of the list of annoying insects.
Previous questions and
answers have dwelt on the ques
tion of how they may leave ca
vities in tree trunks and invade
homes. In your case, I don’t
believe that a carpenter ant
would cut into a healthy grow
ing tree. You must have other
basic problems besides the
ants. To control them, apply
Chlordane spray or dust on the
soil about the trunk of the tree
and. wherever they are found.
Repeat in 150 hours if neces
sary.—W. C. Nettles, prini-
pal extension specialist, en
tomology and plant pathology.
