4-A—THE CHRONICLE, Clinton, S. C., August 27, 1970 tion until the President called
a halt.
Parson lones Says
Light Is Gone
From The Church
pear Mr. Publisher:
I attended our annual church
Convent!oo this past week and
had my tears confirmed - the
light has gone out and the salt
has lost its taste. There’s about
as much darkness in the church
as there is in the world.
Some things they made their
piinds up on, and other things
they danced around on - like a
harefooted fella on hot coals.
They finally voted a lota money
tor the poverty program. They
aid this was necessary to
ake up where the government
eft off. Well sir, that’s gonna
» a site to watch. The govern-
nent program was a flop, so I
■eckon we’re gonna prolong it.
f the government failed with
>illions, it’s hard to see how
ve’re gonna make it with our
housands. I reckon only time
rill tell whether we went front
wards, back-wards, or side
ways. At least it’s movement,
and that seems to be what
everybody is hollering for.
One item that got a lot of dis
cussion but no action was the
war in Vietnam and Cam
bodia. A resolution was intro
duced on the floor that we back
the government’s position in
Southeast Asia. Some were for it
and some were agin it. One
smart fella got up and said,
“How can we support the gov
ernment’s position in Southeast
Asia when we don’t even know
what it is.” Ke pointed out that
the President had one position,
while the Congress had another
position - and they were both the
government. He allowed as
how the Supreme government
might even haveathirdposition.
Then the delegates got to ar
guing as to which branch of
government was supposed to do
what. The discussion finally fiz
zed into a name-calling conven-
. For now, Mr. Publisher, I
gotta close, and put my mind in
neutral. I think I smell my gears
burning. Holy Smoke!

Q. How can I remove burnt
mark* from furniture?
A. If not too deeply embedded,
they will sometimes vamshwhen
rubbed with your usual polish.
If this fails, try using rottenstone
or finely powdered pumice,
mixed to a thin paste with raw
or boiled linseed oil. Rub in the
direction of the grain. Wipe with
another cloth moistened with
plain linseed oil. Repeat a num
ber of times, if necessary, then
polish.
Q. How can I itrengthen glass
ware, and make it less fragile?
A. Put your glassware into a
vessel, filled- with slightly salted
water, which you allow to come
slowly to a boil. The slower
your boiling, the hardier your
glassware will be.
Q. How can I make a gelatin
dessert quickly when time is at
a premium?
A. Mix the gelatin with only
enough hot water to dissolve it,
then use ice water for the re
maining amount of liquid. The
gelatin will set in just a few
minutes Add fruit if you wish,
but be sure it is ice-cold.

Q. How can I prepare a good,
economical, antique-llke stain
for pine wood?
A. Strong tea, diluted with a
little-water, makes a very good
one. When dry, cover with two
thin coats of fresh white shellac,
and when that has dried, wax
for a fine finish.
Q. How can I soften a stiffened
chamois?
A. By giving it a lengthy rinse
in two quarts of lukewarm water
to which a tablespoon of olive
oil has been added. Many other
such easy-to-do household tips
are included in my new book.
Q. What Is a quick remedy for
a loose tile In the hearth of a
fireplace?
A. Lift out the loose tile, pour
in hot paraffin, then quickly re
place the tile, and it should re
main in place indefinitely
The CREATE program is the
recreational component of Lau
rens County Community Action,
Inc., a federally financed project
priviledged people oppor--
tunities to participate in various
activities, to develop good
sportsmanship and citizenship.
CREATE operated • eleven
play fields and / or recreation
centers this summer through
out Laurens County. The county
is divided into three sections
and three professional super
visors are hired, one respon
sible for the recreation pro
gram in each are. The super
visors and their areas are list
ed below:
PERRY DOWNS - MountCar-
mel, Center Rabun, Gray Court,
Enoree and Patterson Town.
CARL DRAKEFORD - Water
loo, Clinton, and Laurens.
HACK PRATER - Joanna,
Cross Hill and Mountville.
In addition to the area sup
ervisors full and part-time help
is working on each playground
along with NYC help.
CREATE sponsored two
baseball teams this summer,
one for boys 16 and under, and
another for boys 13 and under.
The seasons ended on the 7th of
August for the 13 and under and
the 10th of August for the 16 and
under. Each league was divided
into division and the all stars
were selected from each
division. Emphasis for our
baseball program is placed
on developing skills and sport-
manship and not so much on
winning.
The CREATE summer pro
gram ended Friday.

Waves on a pond are mo
tions of the water. Sound
waves are motions of the air
through which they travel. A
hundred years ago scientists
believed that light waves, too,
must be the motion of “some
thing.” They called that
something ether. They be
lieved it existed because
waves, they said, must have
something in which to travel.
Today scientists have tried to
understand the nature of ra
diation itself. One generally
accepted theory is cWled
quantum theory.

SOLAR RADIATION
Quantum tmcort)
Scientists believe that ra
diation is emitted in the form
of tiny quantities, or quanta,
of energy. (“Quanta'’ is the
plural of "quantum.”) Quanta
travel in the form of packets,
or bundles, of waves. Thus,
the tiny quantities of energy
are believed to he wave pack
ets. Quantum theory has
been very successful in lead
ing scientists to a fuller un
derstanding of the nature of
radiation and of the many
ways in which radiation can
be used by mankind.
What is a “Lucy Stoner"?
Lucy Stone was 28 years
old when she graduated from
Oberlin College, Ohio, in 1847.
Because her father did not
approve of college education
for women, Lucy had to teach
school for 9 years in order to
earn the money to go to col
lege. She decided to devote
her life to correcting what
she considered to be the many
injustices in society and the
law. Soon she became an elo
quent speaker against slavery
and for civil rights. For years
she wore bloomers instead of
dresses to protest against the
awkward and uncomfortable
women’s fashions of the
period.
When Lucy Stone married,
she continued to use her own
name as part of her protest
against the laws that made a
wife legally inferior to her
husband. Ever since, a mar
ried woman who keeps her
maiden name has been known
as a "Lucy Stoner.”
WAaf is a tsunami?
Sometimes you hear people
speak of tidal waves. A much
better name for them is
"tsunamis” (from the Japa
nese words for "harbor” and
“wave”), for they are not
caused by tides. Tsunamis are
caused by earthquakes under
• the oceans. The earthquakes
create waves that travel
across the sea at speeds up to
500 miles an hour. When they
reach land, they may pile up
into walls of water as high as
60 feet. They can do very
great damage.

SAMSONITE
Back in 1950 we came up with a g'eat
| >dea for a suitcase.
Snipping cases. For mortar shells.
A combination of materials strong
I enough to carry (and. obviously, protect)
| many pounds of high explosives.
We added fiber, glass reinforcement
I (All over, not just on the comers) Non-
I spring locks that wouldn't spring open
Ion impact. And a strong stainless steel
| frame.
And there we had the American Tour-
| liter, the world's first molded suitcase.
The rest is history.
In 1954, a 3800 lb. car overturned, pin-
I ning an American Tourister for 10 hours.
There were two small broken pieces on
one side, and nothing in the bag got
hurt
$39.50
In 1961, an American Tourister tell
from a car going 70 mph, hit the con
crete highway, and skidded 100 feet.
There were only a few minor surface
scratches.
In 1964, an American Tourister blew
off a car going 60 mph and another car
ran over it. Some of the outer covering
got scuffed
Maybe awful things like this won't
happen to your American Tourister.
Maybe getting thrown into the bag
gage hold of a plane is all that will
happen.
But for a lot of other suitcases, that's
more than enough.
