Before three persons by the

the Atlantic Ocean they had first
to be granted permission to leave
Ireland This necessitated a sea
journey across the Irish Sea,
which although only eighty odd
miles, had to be undertaken in a
ship under sail Upon landing in
England they then had to make
the long overland trip to London
by horse-drawn carriage. In Lon
don they were required to sign a
declaration of loyalty to the
Crown of England before boarding the sailing ship "Transport" which
was docked at London Harbor. The "Transport", although designed to
carry cargo nevertheless was to be the living quarters for over one hun

BY ERNIE SEGARS
A father and daughter were
reunited recently after being
apart for about 40 years.
Mrs. Vivian Matthews Mc
Crary found her father, Rev.
Grady Matthews of 303 Thorn-
well Street in Clinton after a
search that covered several
states and necessitated count
less letters and telephone calls
to friends and relatives.
The Matthews were living in
Michigan when Mrs. McCrary’s
parents were divorced, she
was only two years old at the
time, and that was the last
she saw of him until June of
this year.
Mrs. McCrary married in
Florida and lived there for
several years. She and her hus
band later moved to Huntsville,
Alabama where they live today.
They have three children.

Mrs. McCrary began her
search by contacting Sen. John
Sparkman of Alabama to see if
he could locate Rev. Matthews
on the social security rolls.
However, the Senator checked
this out and discovered that
there were many Grady Mat
thews in the United States pay
ing social security and it would
be just about impossible to
trace them all down.
His daughter then began a
search that took up every va
cation that she and her husband
had for twenty years. She wrote
letters, called relatives and
friends and checked out leads
as to her father’s whereabouts.
She finaly received information
from Mrs. Fred Plemmons in
Greer. Mrs. Plemmons is a
Sunday School teacher at the
Southside Baptist Church in
Greer, and Rev. Matthews had
formerly been associated with
this church. She directed Mrs.
McCrary to a cousin of Rev.
Matthews in Athens, Ga., a
Mrs. PaulineJones. Mrs. Jones
told Mrs. McCrary that her
father had been living in Clin
ton since 1964. She came to
Clinton in June and was re
united with him after a forty
year search.
Mrs. McCrary was able to
see Rev. Matthews for only a
few minutes on her first trip,
and she returned last week for a
three day visit. She is his only
child.

An anatomy of the term
gossip Is one of the best il
lustrations of how the deflnl
tion of a word can evolve
from some characteristic of
Its original Intended mean
Ing.
The word gossip actually
denoted "a godparent" of a
child In former times when It
was a widespread practice to
have a close friend of the
family act aa the child’s
•'sponsor in baptism.” The
Anglo-Saxon word was then
spelled godsibbe. which lit
erally means “god-relative"
and which signified the spiri
tual affinity of the baptised
and their sponsors. It Is so
used by Chaucer In his
Canteberry Tales.
As the years passed, how
ever, the word which came to
be spelled as gossib, then
gossip. was extended In Its
meaning to describe not only
the godparents but also all
the very close friends of a
family.
To those Intimate friends,
family matters of a very per
sonal or private nature were
often entrusted. Naturally,
some of these "friends"
could not resist passing along
these confidential matters to
other acqualntences. These
“friends” were still referred
to as gossips by those
whose trust they had be
trayed, but now, Instead of
denoting a close friendship,
the term was applied deri
slvely.
Today It Is used as a syno
mym for newsmonger, tattle
tale, or a groundless rumor
Symposium, which today
describes a social gathering
or banquet or conference in
which there is a “Iwwdnter
change of ideas? par
tlcular subject, was first used
In ancient Greece to mean a
drinking party.” The word
actually translates "a drink
Ing together,” which was a
little social function that usu
ally followed the banquet
proper and was character
Ized by singing, drinking and
conversation. As early as
Plato’s time the word carried
essentially the same meaning
as It does today, however
Eating High on (hr hog

It Is usually appUed to some
person or family who has
struggled up from poverty to
attain prosperity. Having
