Prime Minister Of India
Highlighted experiences of

Embassy. No photographs were
permitted in the area were the
assembly was held. The Am
bassador addressed his re
marks primarily to questions
asked about US AID (U. S. for
eign aid to India) and present
trends in political affairs of the
country.
Commenting on USAID to
India, the largest amount pre
sently being given to any for
eign country, the Ambassador
said he believes the amount is
highly justified. Other staff
members of the Embassy gave
more detailed accounts of how
USAID is being used.
Addressing the teachers and
two other groups of professors
from American Colleges and
Universities in her home, the
P.M. spoke in response to ques
tions by the groups. She spoke
bitterly about the land grab
movement, stating “Land grab

REV. CRUMLIN
cratic/ She pointed out that
certain political parties are
trying to outwit each other by
adopting certain undesirable
methods.
Replying to a question, Mrs.
Gandhi said that by and large
India has friendly relations with
the U. S. The U. S. loans given
to India, she stated, have be
come very (expensive because
of the strings attached. India
Is now asking tor re-scheduling
of earlier loan agreements, she
stated.
“Under-employment and not
un-employment”, said the
P.M., “is the chief problem of
India today. People have jobs
but they are not satisfied with
the jobs and wages.”
In response to a suggestion
that India’s non-alignment
policy is one-sided, Mrs.
Gandhi denied this fact. She said
the country’s policy should be
based on historical com-
plusions and geographical situ
ations.
Combat fliers in Vietnam
often give names to their
planes. It is a time-honored
Air Force tradition that many
pilots follow.
Lt. Col. Jack C. Spillers,
of Clinton and the son of Rev.
and Mrs. J. W. Spillers of
this city, naturally sought to
sought to give his Republic
Thunderchief, number 220, an
appropriate name. He chose the
slogan “I Dream of Jeanie,"
a popular television show and
also the name of Spillers’wife.
»
And so, he flew his plane
over North Vietnam with the
“I Dream of Jeanie* slogan
emblazoned on its side. There
was also a turbained genie
coming from an Aladdin’s lamp
just below the cockpit.
Spillers finished his 100 mis
sions and left Thailand in 1967.
He returned in 1969 to begin
another tour of duty and Jeanie
was waiting for him. However,
the plane had l)een attached to
another squadron, and Spillers
was unable to get it. He was
assigned to another plane, num
ber 229, and he dubbed it
“ Jeanie II.”
He had great success with
this plane, in that he has log
ged the same number of take
offs and landings, a very im
portant feat for a pilot who
wants to keep himself and his
plane in tact.
However, “Jeanie I* was not
quite as fortunate. One day in
April, the plane’s engine losts
its pressure and started down.
The pilot of the plane ejected
and landed safely, but the plane
plowed up a Thai farmer’s field
before finally coming to rest.
It was in several million pieces,
and the only part of the plane
left intact was the tail as
sembly. On this part of the
plane was the number, 220, still
visible. Spillers was on leave
at the time and was presented
his old plane’s number. He took
it and made a plaque, dedicat
ed to his wife, whose name has
flown over 200 missions in
hostile territory. He presented
it to his wife at the plane’s old
home base in Thailand.
Spillers said after the pre
sentation, “That’s why when
Jeanie got the chance to visit
the base briefly, we wanted to
present what was left of num
ber 220 to her. There are only
two “Jeanies” left. But that’s
enough to see me through.”
