BY SALLY SHAW
DEAR SALLY: I’m dating a
certain man who keeps telling
me that if he were about 10
years younger he would ask me
to marry him. I keep telling
him the age factor means noth
ing to me. Then he says that if
he had a job that didn’t take him
out of town so much, he’d marry
I tell him that doesn’t bother me
either. And so he keeps going on
and on with these “IF* state
ments. I’m wondering IF it’s
worth my time going on with
him and wondering IF he’ll ever
be really serious about matri
mony. ON EDGE
DEAR ON EDGE: I think that
IF you want a man who is serious
about matrimony, you’d better
look elsewhere -- rather than
wasting anymore time with this
present ‘Iffy’’ fellow who more
than likely will continue to * if*
you along indefinitely.
DEAR SALLY: My husband’s
mother came for a “short visit’
three months ago, and she’s
still with us! We had no room
for her and she knew it when
she came, but I gave up my
twin bed to her and I sleep on
the sofa in the living room She
and her son (my husband) have
been sleeping in our bedroom all
this time, and both my husband
and I are fed 19 with the ar
rangement, but don’t know how
to handle this with his mother
without hurting her feelings.
Any advice? EVICTED.
DEAR EVICTED: Inform your
mother-in-law immediately--
kindly, but firmly--that you are
resuming your rightful place in
your bedroom and that from now
on you will bed her down as com
fortably as possible on the sofa.
This you should have done long
ago, when that ’short visit’
stretched out beyond about a
week or two.
DEAR SALLY: I’m a girl of
17, and have been dating a cer
tain young man of 20 whom I
rendered to us in the loss of
our loved one. Everything done
and said were all so grate
fully appreciated. May God
bless you.
Four Bailey Scholarship re
cipients will be attending three
different South Carolina Col
leges. These include Paul Fal
law and Biba Hiers, Presbyter
ian College; Steve Fennell, Un
iversity of South Carolina; and
Barbara Handback, Winthrop.
Ten Bailey Loan Scholars
will attend six different
schools. Among these are Sara
Hiers and Henry Simmons,
Presbyterian; Ginger Crocker
and Ginger Gault, Columbia
College; James Richey and Jes
sie Mae Johnson, S. C. State;
Jack Oliver Campbell, Spart
anburg Jr. College; Lynn Mc
Gee, Winthrop; and Julian
Bryan and George P. Wilkie,
University of S. C.
like very much. He happens to
be rather short in stature, the
same height as mine, five feet
five inches, and he’s very
stocky in build. My Dad con
tinually annoys me by referring
to him (when he isn’t around)
as “Mr. Five-by-Five.’ Dad
says he doesn’t mean to be de
rogatory, that this is just a
term of affection or friend
ship. But I don’t like it one
little bit and I’m sure the boy
would be dreadfully hurt if he
knew about it. What do you
think4l)0»4 this? SB.
DEAR SB: If Dad really
means"this as “a term of af
fection or friendship,’ why
does he use it only when the
boy isn’t around? Maybe if
you’ll ask Dad this question,
he’ll get the message.
