Q. Crabgrass is taking over
my lawn. Is there an easy way
to kill it bef-re seeds form?
A. This aggressive summer
annual weed grass grows faster
than all desirable turf grasses.
It takes advantage of warm
temperatures and thin turf to
appear quickly, presenting you
with a major problem: how can
I get rid of it. During August,
your best course is using any
of a number of post-emergence
herbicides--all arsenicals
sold under various trade names.
Repeat the treatments 7-10 day
intervals. One word of catuion:
apply during the cool of the
evening, and heed all label
instructions. You must expect
some discoloration "f the des
irable grasses. You can con
trol crabgrass easier by apply
ing pre-emergence herbicides
before the grass germinates in
the spring. Ask your county a-
gent about them next winter. F.
D. Ledeboer, asst, professor of
horticulture.
Q. When is the best time to
plant pine trees?
A. Usually after two heavy
frost This period usually
ranges from Dec. 1 to March
15. During this period many
planters also wait until soil
moisture is plentifuL Planting
during the early part of the
period is desirable since the
plants have a longer period to
settle their root system before
growth starts in the spring. W.
J. Barker, principal Extension
Specialist, forestry.
Q. We’re thinking of buying
a mobile home. Do you have
any information on how long
they last
A. Few facts are available
on longevity of mobile homes,
but most guessers estimate 15-
20 years if good care is given
and the home remains in one
place. Frequent moves tend to
shorten the life. Barbara J.
Griffin, associate Extension
specialist, housing.
