Mrs. Lillian Carnes of Art-
esla, California returned on Sat
urday alter spending two weeks
with her brother and sister-in-
law Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Estes.
On Sunday, August 9, a family
get together was held at th$
Estes home. Joining them and
Mrs. Carnes for dinner were
Mr. and Mrs. Gaines Estes of
Ware Shoals, Ralph Estes of
Palatka, Fla., Mrs. Mary Evans
and children of Hickory Tavern,
Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Estes and
children of Mauldin, Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Estes, and Darlene,
Mrs. Thelma Estes, Chucky
and Jodie Souls of Laurens,
Mr. and Mrs. David Estes and
Missy, Mrs. Pauline Raman-
tanin, Mrs. Eva Russo and Ted
of Spartanburg, and Mr. and
Mrs. Gary Bodie and children
of Joanna.
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Adams,
Tracy and Trey of Houston, Tex.
arrived on Friday and is
spending the week with Mrs.
Adams parents, Mr. and Mrs.
C. W. Estes and other friends
and relatives.
Jeff and Gene Hogan spent
last week-end at Myrtle Beach.
Sunday guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Alvin Bedenbaugh were
Mr. and Mrs. Coy Bedenbaugh
and family of Lexington and
Mr. and Mrs. Colie Perry of
Columbia. On Saturday Mr. and
Mrs. Bedenbaugh visited Mr.
and Mrs. Tommy Croft and Mr.
and Mrs. Bruce Morgan. They
had been here last week-end at
which time the Bedenbaughs had
honored Mrs. Croft, Mr. and
Mrs. Morgan with a birthday
dinner, with their immediate
families there to enjoy it.
Mr. Houston May spent Tues
day and Wednesday in Manches
ter, Tenn. with his mother, Mrs.
Annie May, who is ill at her home
there.
ON LEAVE
Mr. and Mrs. Alan B. Hall
man, titfna and infant son Alan
Shaw, who were stationed in
Georgia spent his leave here
with Mrs. Hallmans parents,
Mrs. Margie Simpson, Miss
Jorja Simpson and Miss
Margaret White were Saturday
overnight guest of Mr. and Mrs.
M. T. Weaver, Debbie and Alan
in Maritla, Ga. Debbie and Alan
joined them on Sunday and they
spent the day at Stone Mountain
and Six Flags Over Georgia.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wall and
Mrs. John L. Moon of Greer
and Mrs. Yates Spur ling of
Cliffside, N. C. visited Mr. and
Mrs. T. G. Murphy during last
week.
Mrs. Carrie Belle Boyce
visited in Sumter over the week
end.
Mrs. Josie Boyce, Miss Kar-
end Lowery and Miss Vicki
Humphrey joined Mr. and Mrs.
Vernon Boyce in Lynchburg and
spent the week-end at Myrtle
Beach.
Mrs. J. M. Bozard attended i
the graduation exercises at
Clemson University on Sat
urday, August 8 at which her
grandson, Richard M. Cash of
Cowpens received his Masters
Degree in Industrial Education.
She had joined Mr. and Mrs.
R. R. Cash and Mrs. Richard
M. Cash to attend, afterwhich
they all were supper guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth C. Grif
fis in Pendleton.
On Sunday Mrs. Bozard join
ed other members of the family
and attended the annual Bishop
reunion which was held at the
Joanna Club house.
RETURNED FROM GERMANY
SP/4 Randy Rushton returned
from a tour of duty in Germany
and has been spending a month
leave with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. ReginaldRushton. On Mon
day he left for Ft. Lewis, Wash
ington where he will be stationed
at the present time.
RECEIVES DISCHARGE
Sgt. Joseph Abrams has re
turned after receiving his dis
charge at Travis Air Force
BASE, California. His last tour
of duty was in Viet Nam. He
is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Floyd Abrams.

OUTING
The Young People of the
First Presbyterian Church of
Joanna enjoyed a picnic on Sat
urday, August 8, Rev. and Mrs.
Jim Bankhead acompanied
them. It was held at Warrier
Creek near Clinton. A good time
was had by the entire group.
EASTERN STAR
On Saturday, August 8, the
OES area school #4 was held
in Sumter. Attending the meet
ing were Mrs. Ella Lowery of
Joanna, Mrs. Lillian Pressley
of Laurens, Mrs. Addie Woods
and Mrs. Irene Pullon of Ware
Shoals. After the meeting the
ladies were overnight guests of
Mrs. Lee McLeod.
On Sunday, August 16, Mrs.
Ella Lowery, Mrs. Lillie Pres
sley joined by Mrs. Joann Green
of Laurens attended the Worthy
Matrons White Ray Club at the
Masonic Temple in Dentsville.
The Order of the Rainbow
for girls is putting on a program
Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the
Clubhouse in Joanna. The public
is invited to attend.

Horizon Girls Enjoy Trip To Beach
4-H Girls
Attend
Camp Cooper

Five girls from Laurens
County recently attended the
State 4-H Conservation Camp
at Camp Bob Cooper. The Camp
was held from Tuesday, July 28
through Thursday, July 30.
The girls attending were De
bra Adams, Kim Kelley, and
Sandra Longshore of the Joanna
4-H Club and Sally Jones and
Cheryl Kellett of the Greenpond
4-H Club. Mrs. Nell Harrison,
Asst. Home Economist, accom
panied the group.
The theme of the camp was
“Environment - Action Now."
Various speakers pointed out
problems of air pollution, how
our soil and water couldbeused
to improve our environment, and
the use of pesticides.
The girls enjoyed swimming
and other recreation that was
planned for them.
A trip to Ocean Drive be
came a reality for 20 members
of Mrs. J. E. Seawright’s 11th
grade Horizon Girls on Sunday
August 9.
The trip had been planned
for two years with the girls
saving their dues, raking leaves,
selling jewelery, and baby sit
ting.
Mrs. Seawright was accom
panied for the week by Mrs.
Olin Stewart of Mountville as
chaperon.
Some of the nighlights of the^
week were trips to Myrtle
Beach, shopping sprees, movies
and, in the wee hours of morn
ing, shaving cream battles. On
one of the trips to the amuse
ment center all twenty of the
girls rode the merrie go around
at one time. °
Along with the good time the
girls in groups of four took
time about preparing meals and
other work details.
MrsjSeawright in reviewing
the week’s activities stated that
part of their schedule for the
coming year would include cook
ing classes at the Camp Fire
Hut beginning in September.
Saturday night was the big
night, the group enjoyed a sea
food dinner at Calabash and re
turned to Myrtle Beach for the
dance at the Pavilion. Mr. Sea
wright who rejoined the groip
on Friday night to help with
luggage and the return trip
home, accompanied them on this
Saturday night excursion.

night after helping get the girls
settled in their beach house.
