THE CHRONICLE, Clinton, S. C„ August 20, 1970—6-B TIPS FROM CLEMSON HOME & Q. Numberous small holes are appearing in unpainted sills, sleepers, and subflooring of our home. Should we be concerned? A. Sounds like the powder post beetle. They and their characteristic holes will be found in many older homes. Apparently they work for a period of years then tend to slow down. Several persistent spray materials such asChlor- dane and Dieldrin will stop the injury. Don’t confuse the powder post beetles and their damage with the much more serious in* jury which may be caused by the Old House Borer or Lyctus Beetles in hardwoods. If in doubt, check with a profession al erterminator.--W. C. Net tles, principal extension sp^c. ialist, entomology and pathology. Q. How can I rid a water oak tree of mistletoe? The tree’s 70 feet high and three feet through at the trunk. M.G.B.,Greer. A. That’s a problem without suitable remedy, as far as we know. The only solution is to have the mistletoe removed by hand and hope it doesn’t return. If you don’t have someone who can do it, call on a tree service company if you really have a problem.--E. V. Jones, assis tant extension wwvwwvw. Q. Snails and slugs are an noying in the way they crawl over the patio, walks and steps, and also feed on plants such as salvia. Where do they co me from and what can I do about them? A. Snails and slugs are not insects but mollusks, zoological relatives of oysters, clams and shellfish. A slug is a snail with out a shell. Both snails and slugs need the protection of damp places and debris around a garden or home. Metaldehyde baits, sold under several trade names at garden supply stores, have long been used for snail and slug con trol. Metaldehyde is a speci fic attractant and is usually mixed with some material like Calcium arsenate or Sevin. Cleaning up the garden to get rid of hiding places is always a good idea.--W. C. Nettles, principal extension specialist, 1 entomology and plant pathology. Q. We have bronze ejuga on sloping banks of the yard Each year, patches in the middle rotten and die. Otherwise it spreads well and looks healthy. What’s the remedy. Mrs. R. A. M., Greenville. A. Sounds like a disease known as crown rot. Dead pat ches usually show up during the first tew warm humid days of spring. The disease-causing fungus enter the plant through the roots and crown and cuts off the water supply. It can be spread by water or cultivating tools. It’s also possible that you have a rock or some other ob ject a few inches under the dead spot that causes a drought condition and kills the plant during extremely dry weather.- E. V. Jones, assistant exten sion specialist, horticulture. Sculptor Selects Stainless Twenty-four constructions in nickel stainless steel, erected by the American sculptor George Rickey, were exhibited recently in the Boymans-van Beuningen museum in Holland. The main exhibit was two 49-foot rectan gular stainless steel arms that rock gently in the breeze on a 20- foot-tall pylon. To guard against accidents, Rickey had an engineer check the balance of the struc ture.
