Ever ask yourself whether
fats and oils are good guys or
bad guys? Probably not in so
many words, but you may have
wondered whether to eat your
toast with butter or margarine
or put that luscious dressing on
your salad (unless you’ve never
had to diet). Well, the answer
isn’t a simple good or bad. Fats
and oils are both. They’re good
because they supply energy
value, vitamins, essential fatty
acids - PLUS they add flavor to
our foods and they satisfy us.
But they can be bad guys, too,
because if they’re eaten in ex
cess, they’ll add to our
measurements. Happy solution,
fats and oils in moderation es-

Using fats and oils: Butter,
margarine, shortening, lards,

cookies, cakes, pastries, hot
breads and yeast breads. But
ter and margarine are also used
for sauces, flavoring vege

Oils are used f< r salad dress

also used, as is shortening,
for deep-fat frying. Lard is a

Sunglasses
- Funglasses?
BY HELEN C. CAMP
Extension Home Economist
If you’re setting your sights
on a new pair of sunglasses,
you sh ould know that there are
sunglasses and there are fun-
glasses. Sunglasses come with
neutral lenses - gray, brown,
and green -- and are worn for
two very basic health reasons:
1. T reduce excessive
brightness while permittingyou
to see clearly and comfortably
without squinting, blinking, or
tearing.
2. To protect your eyes from
prolonged exposure to the sun’s
j'ays wben youTe outdoors.
Thus, when you choose a pair ■"
of sunglasses, consider how
much light you need for the acti
vities you’ll be engaging in. The
glasses you wear for golf, ten
nis, saling, and sunning should
be considerably darker than
those worn f r outdoor reading
r driving. Remember, too.that
sunglasses are for sunlight
only. They should not be worn
where the light is already dim
med to a small degree of its
natural intensity. Don’t wear
sunspecs indoors or for tunnel,
twilight, or night driving.
Funglasses are primarily
cosmetic accessories with
lenses that come in a kaleido
scope of colors - gold, mauve,
violet, blue. Because they
should be used like makeup to
emphasize the color of your
eyes and the thickness of your
lashes, any lens tint that strikes
your fancy and compliments
your face is fine. Keep in mind,
though, that funglasses should
never be worn as substitutes
for sunglasses or when driving.
The colored lenses may be pret
ty, but they Can interfere with
prompt recognition of signal
lights.
Buying Basics: Whether
you’re buying fun - or sunglass
es, you should make sure that
The lenses are of equal color
and thickness as well as free
from image-distorting flaws. If
they ’re glass, they should be the
shatter-resistant safety glass.
The frames feel comfortable at
your nose, temple, and ears.
Frames and lenses should be
large enough to provide ample
protection, but not so large that
they interfere with side vision.
