hunting license. Both of these
licenses expired on June 30 of
this year. The Legislature
authorized that the holders of
such licenses would be entitled
to a credit of $2.50, less any
credits given previously, when
they purchased their new re
sident fishing licenses or re-
ident combination fishing and
hunting licenses. In these times
of higher prices and the reduced
buying power of the family dol
lar, this credit is worthy of
consideration. If you want to
take advantage of it, you must
visit you license agent before
last day of July. On August 1
the cost of these licenses will
be the same for everyone, $5.25
for a resident fishingand$10.25
for combination fishing and
hunting license.

ELECTRICITY: What d^es it
mean F us t-day° There is
hardly a way t>> measure its
value. H“W many of you re
member studying by the old
kerosene lamp 0 I can remem
ber it very well, and it was a
po T light, especially with a
large family - the house was
heated by a fireplace and you
had to keep warm as well as try
to study. I don't kn w f any
thing that has added moretothe
standard f living f r rural
pe-ple than electricity. This
would rank along with the auto
mobile, as far as I m concern
ed. It may be that the auto
mobile was enjoyed by just a few
back then, but electricity was
enjoyed by all members of the
family. And as time went on,
the refrigerator, washing ma
chine, and all the electrical ap
pliances were added. I am sure
that you who have freezers will
say that this is ne of the ap
pliances that added greatly to
your standard >f living. I asked
Joe Smith, Office Manager of
the REA local ffice, about the
co-op and Joe was telling me
that the Laurens Co-op serves
over 11,0<90 members and con
tinues to gr w.
I was talking with Wayne Can
non, County Agent in Lancaster
County and a brother to our own
C. B. Cannon, and he mentioned
that one of his proudest ac
complishments while being
County Agent was that of having
a part in selling the REA to
rural people. He said at the
time, the Governor of the State
called all County Agents to a
meeting and asked them to work
hard and sell this to the people
of South Carolina. I am sure
every agent that had a part in
this endeavor can look back with
great pride. The electricity,
along with the telephone, and the
farm-to-market roads, brought
country folks right up with our
sophisticated city brothers. I
am sure this is an appropriate
time to express our congratu
lations to Jack Templeton for
having been appointed manager
of the Laurens REA Co-op. I
know Jack understands rural
people, having come up out in
the country himself, and he
knows the great benefit that they
derive from this service. It is
also fitting that we express our
appreciation to the fine work
Henry Paris did through the
years in organizing, building,
expanding, and giving the people
the service that he has through
the years. I know all members
want to thank Henry and wish
him the very best in his re
tirement.
Our County has other pro
grams that we should all work
together on and see that they
come true.
Community trash disposal
pits should be established. This
is important if we are to keep
up with the times and not get
buried in our own filth. We must
get the job done.
The telephone lines between
Laurens and Clinton and Mount-
ville and Cross Hill should be
open up and toll free. The
companies involved should be a
part of our communities to the
extent that they, too would like
to contribute to or ogress.
