Mr. and Mrs. James Guy Mil
ler spent last Sunday with Mr.
and Mrs. Roger Miller and
Sonya in Greenville.
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Boyce
spent last Saturday in Lamar
with Mrs. Maggie Sutton and
Alma, and in Lynchburg with
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Boyce.
On Sunday afternoon they visited
Mr. and Mrs. GuyMisenhiemer
in Chester.
Debbie Brown is spending a
week with Ruth Roberts in
Greenwood. She joined the
Roberts family who are vacat
ioning in Florida.
Mrs. Pearl Williams suffered
a broken hip and is now confined
to Self-Memorial Hospital in
Greenwood.
Mrs. Idell Shipp, Mrs. Mae
Smith and Mrs. Rhunette Banks
entered the local hospital last
week.
Ricky Bradberry and Dottie
Norris is spending the week in
Greer with Mr. and Mrs. David
Marshall.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Crocker
and Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Crock
er of Clinton were Sunday din
ner guests of Mrs. Louise Jones
in Spartanburg.
FELLOWSHIP SUPPER
On Sunday evening members
of the Joanna First Pres
byterian Churchenjoyedanhour
of fellowship at their church
house. It was held especially
to welcome the new pastor and
his wife Rev. and Mrs. Jim
Bankhead. Also, special guests
were Rev. and Mrs. W. T. King
of Newberry. Rev. King has held
services for the past few
months.
The supper was served buffet
style and enjoyed by the large
number there for the occasion.
REVIVAL
A revival is now in progress
at the Pentecostal Holiness
Church, and will continue
through the Sunday morning
eleven o’clock service. The
evening services being at 7:30.
The pastor, Rev. Floyd Brewer
invites the public to attend. The
guest minister is Rev. Vernon
Potter of Raleigh, N. C.
PICNIC
The Pentecostal Holiness
Church closed their Bible
School on July 18 with a 111
average attendence. The large
group and their leaders then
enjoyed a picnic held at the
Sumter National Forest on the
Joanna-Whitmire road.
Margaret Bozard spent a
week with Mr. and Mrs. R. r.
Cash in Cowpens. She returned
with her parents Mr. and Mrs.
J. D. Bozard and Martin and
Mrs. J. M. Bozard who were
there for a short visit on Sun
day.
Mrs. J. M. Bozard spent a
few days last week in Pendleton
with her daughter and son in
law, Mr. and Mrs. K. C. Griffis.
Mrs. F. D. Bragg and Mr. and
Mrs. Roy Cannon and Michael
were in Greenville on Saturday
to attend the all night gospel
singing held at the Greenville
Memorial Auditoriumn.
Mrs. Jettie Norris, Dottie and
James returned last Thursday
from Clearwater, Fla. where
they had spent several weeks
with Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Norris,
Miss Ruby Fenell and Mrs.
Mertie Walker. While there they
went on a sight-seeing tour in
St. Augustine and other places
of interest
Mr. and Mrs. Algle Abrams
and Martha Ellen were Sunday
dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Algie Abrams, Jr. inWhitmire.
Mr. and Mrs. Danny Baker
and children and Suzanne Smith
of Ninty-Six spent Sunday with
Mrs. Alice Davenport The
children and Suzanne had been
there since Friday, and, on Fri
day night they enjoyed a pajama
party.
Buddy Weaver of Marietta,
Ga. who has been visiting Mrs.
Preston White and Mr. and Mrs.
J. T. Weaver, returned with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marlon
Weaver, who were here last
week-end. Their daughter, Deb
bie stayed for a longer visit

N. C. returned on Tuesday after
spending a week with Mrs. L.
L. Simpson and Mrs. Preston

drop-in held for Mr. and Mrs.
Elonzo Sbealy in honor of their
50th wedding anniversary. It
was held in Little Mountain last
Sunday afternoon.

S/Sgt. and Mrs. Wallace San
ford are spending a 15
leave with Mr. Vic Saniord, Mr.
and Mrs. Heyward Jbver and
other relatives. They will re
turn to Langley A. F.B. in Hamp
ton, Va. on August 3rd.

All About WonIs
Although writing was in
vented by the Sumerians, the
Phoenicians are said to have
been the first to design a
workable system of signs to
represent actual sounds, so
that what one said could also
be written down. The first let
ter in this system was aleph
which represented the sound
ak. The second letter was beth
which stood for the 6 sound.
And so on. With some slight
modifications, the Greeks ac
cepted the Phoenician system,
calling these letters alpha and
beta.
Just as we speak of our
present day system of letters
as the ABC’s, so the Greeks
used the alpha and beta to
refer to theirs. When interest
was revived in the classical
Greek language these two
words were joined together in
popular usage and gave us our
English word alphabet.
When one runs the gamut,
we mean that he has been
through the entire range, from
one extreme to the other. The
word comes from the Great
Scale of musical letters de
vised by Guido to indicate
notes, which he used in teach
ing singing. Guido started this
scale with the Greek letter
Gamma, which is G, and call
ed his corresponding note ut,
which has since been changed
to do (as in do, re, mi, etc.).
Gamma-ut, as the first note
of the scale, eventually came
to be used to denote the entire
scale. It was later shortened
to gamut.
New World explorers got
their first look at the turkey
in the settlements of the Pue
blo Indians who had domesti
cated the fowl. Wild turkeys
were also found in abundance
and became a favorite dish on
the table of the new settlers
from Europe. These pioneer
Americans, who soon discover
ed how to imitate the gobblers’
mating call and bring the birds
within gun range, also noticed
that the love talk between the
strutting turkey-cock and the
hens dropped all pretense at
modesty. From this, the phrase
to talk turkey originated, ety
mologists say, and means “to
talk plainly and frankly,” or,
by extension, “to discuss the
