Lose Licenses
The licenses of more than
35,000 South Carolina drivers
were withdrawn by the Highway
Department during the 1960-70
fiscal year which ended June 30
as a result of various traffic
law Infractions.
The major cause for suspen
sion in the 12 month period was
driving under the influence of
intoxicants. This group totaled
9,617 for the year. Next was ac
cumulated points under the sta
te’s point system law which ac
counted for 6,946 suspensions.
F ollowlng closely as a major
driver license suspension cause
was the violation of the South
Carolina Safety Responsibility
law which totaled 5,991. Feck
less driving accounted for 1,141
and other type traffic law vio
lations brought about the sus
pension of 11,342 drivers’ licen
ses.
The total lor the 1969-70 fis
cal rear was 35.037.

an increase of 1.3 m 1111 on from
1968.

The Art Of Being Kind

Have you learned the art of
being courteous and kind? It’s
wonderful to discover how beau
tifully it works and how satisfy
ing it is.
Recently my wife and I ce
lebrated our golden wedding an
niversary. There were many
letters of congratulations and
good wishes. Among the tokens
came the following lines by an
unknown author.
“ My Ole Man* - “ Perhaps I’m
just old-fashioned and a little
out of date, for I listen to his
footsteps and worry when he’s
late; I watch for his homecom
ing as in the long-ago, and I
reckon that’s because I love
him so.
He puts his arms around me
and kisses me before he goes,
And twice a week, maybe, he
brings me home a rose; He pats
me on the cheeks and says
nice things to me, How could a
woman help but feel as happy
as could be?
You know it doesn’t take so
much to make a woman glad,
But just the things left unsaid
will often make her sad. A wo
man likes attention and affec
tion all the time. All this old
world lacks is just the art of
being kind.
And so we’ve lived these 50
years, my ole man and I,
Enjoying sweetest things in life
things money cannot buy; It may
be old-fashioned, and they may
call us ‘out of date’, we’ll keep
on lovin’ tenderness and leave
luxuries to fate."
As I look back over the years,
I find wonderful truth in these
simple old-fashioned lines. Ac
tually it doesn’t take the big
things to produce happiness. It
is the practice of the art of
showing courtesy and kindness.
These are little things, but life
is made up of little things.
In more than 40. years oi
marriage counseling I have list
ened to many domestic compl
aints and quarrels. They all are
precipitated by a multitude of
little things, particularly neg
lect.
We live in a machine age. In
all of our homes there are a
multitude of mec^anic^l
gets. They all require lubrica
tion. The prime example is the
automobile. We fail to lubri
cate and change oil atourperU.
And so it is. with the oil or
love, kindness, and apprecia
tion which lubricates human re
lations in home and society.

Cultivate the art of being po
lite and kind, not only at home
but in all of your relations. You
will have learned the artofhap-
piness-that we were created by
God to love Him and to lore one
another. Practice this and we
- will both fulfill out destiny,
