Firebomb

threw two firebombs in a cloth
shop operated by R. W. Putnam
at the intersection of U.S. 76
and Secondary Road 46. The
bombs did only minor damage,
burning part of a table and scor
ching a rug. A nearby grocery
E d by R. A. Putnam was also
mbed but was only slightly
damaged.
The arsonists also hit a ware
house of the Clinton MillingCo.
Manager E. K. Adair said that
in empty building used to store
fertilizer was burned along one
vail and the ceiling.
According to Marvin DeYoung
of the Clinton Fire Department,
the Clinton area has been hit
by several fires that may have
teen set. Nabor's Store (which
also served as the Clinton Bus
Station) was burned on July 1.
DeYoung said that there was
evidence to indicate that this
blaze was set.
Other fires under investiga-
tion include an abandoned store
that was destroyed on July 5.
On that same day, an abandon
ed house was burned on the
Pump House Road in the city.
On July 4, a store run by T.
D. Douglas about amile south-
vest of Clinton was also hit by
a firebomb, causing only slight
damage.

since 1968.

ion homecoming this Sunday.
Activities will begin with the
10 o’clock Sunday School Hour.
Houston Ellis, general superin
tendent, has issued an urgent
request for all members to be
in their classes to hear the
lesson taught which deals with
the problem >f sin as discussed
in the third chapter of Genesis.
There will be extra workers in
the nursery during the Sunday
School hour and the morning
worship hour.
During the 11 o'clock worship
hour, the choir will sing an old
favorite “Tis The Old Time
Religion.* The Lorance Peace
Family Singers from Green
ville will sing the offertory and
the special music’. During the
hour, all former members and
visitors will be recognized. The
pastor will deliver the sermon.
At 1:00, a picnic lunch will
be served. The church will fur
nish the plates, napkins, silver,
cups and a *3 wash tub full of
iced lemonade. All those at
tending the picnic are asked to
bring a full basket of old fash
ion cooking.
An old fashion song service
will begin at 2 o’clock. Among
the singers to be present are
the Keenan Family from Green
ville; The Lorance Peace Fami
ly Singers; The Ancel Peace
Family Singers from Hender
sonville, N. C.; Miss Kay Crow
from Greenville; The Lydia
Pentecostal Quartet; Mr. Bruce
Galloway; and, the Lydia Bap
tist Choir and Quartet.
In order to add color and
variety to the day several of
the members will wear old
fashion clothes. A commit
tee will select the outfit which
best portrays the spirit of the
day.
The church will be 61 years
old in October, which makes it
the oldest church in the com
munity. During the years it has

Clinton Hosts
UF Campaign
Workshop
A “United Way* Campaign
Workshop will be held at the
Mary Musgrove Hotel on Thurs
day, July 30.
The workshop will start with
complimentary coffee and do
nuts at 10:30 a.m., and the first
formal session will begin at
11 a.m. The morning period will
be primarily for general cam
paign, division and section
chairman, and others envolved
in fund-raising. After a lunch
eon break from 12:30 to 1:30
p.m., the afternoon sessionwiU
be devoted to films and other
campaign aides, publicity and
public relations, and campaign
supplies.
There will be no registra
tion fee or charge, except lunch.
This meeting will be for
United Fund workers from all
counties in upper South Car
olina. There will be a similar
meeting held in Florence on
July 28 at the Florence Coun
try Club for workers in the
lower state.

County Road
Contract Awarded
Award of a $260,793 contract
for 8.5 miles of road construc
tion in Laurens county was an
nounced today by the State High
way Department.
Hunter Brothers, Inc.ofGray
Court was awarded the contract
on the basis of the firm’s low
bid, according to ChiefHighway
Commissioner Silas N. Pear-
man. Three bids were entered
ranging as high as $349,750.
The contract calls for grad
ing, drainage and asphaltic con
crete surfacing of 7.2 miles on
S. C. Route 101 and secondary
system road S-54 from road S-
20 southerly across U. S. 76 to
the intersection of S. C. Route
252.
The project includes 1.2 miles
on road S-663, a loop extending
from S-54 back to S-54. The
project is about six miles west
of Laurens.
Contractor’s bids on the work
were opened May 19.

Firemen Answer
Two Fire Calls
Clinton Firemen have ans
wered two firecalls since last
Saturday. Neither results in
major damage.
On Sunday, firemen were cal
led at 8:35 p.m. to Bartee Cir
cle where there was a grease
fire on the stove. On Monday at
8:30 p.m., a bus caught fire at
the corner of Sloan and Pitts
Street, resulting in minor
damage.
