HERBERT SPAUGH Put these down in your rule book. Read them everyday. They were sent me by a correspond ent “Ten Mistakes to Avoid*. 1. Remorse over yesterday’s failure, 2. Anxiety over the day’s problems, 3. Worry over tomorrow’s uncertainty, 4. Waste of the moment’s oppor tunity, 5. Procrastination with one’s present duty, 6. Resent ment of another’s success, 7. Criticism of a neighbor’s im perfection, 8. Impatience with youth’s immaturity, 9. Skepti cism of our nation’s future, 10. Unbelief in God’s previdence - William Arthur Ward. As I read these I recall a recent visit by a successful business executive and his wife. He grew up in the church Ipas- tored. As we talked with one another, I asked him about his spiritual life. He replied, “Pastor, you taught me well. A partnership with God is the only way to live. Everyday I’m grateful that the Lord Jesus Christ is my Savior and I thank him. Daily I seek the guidance and direction of His Holy Spirit in all of my life. He has never failed me yet and I trust Him for the future. As to the effect of my Chris tian faith on my business, let me say that I’ll never engage in a business deal where some one gets hurt.’ The 10 mistakes given above are not easy to avoid if we trust in our own strength and wisdom to do it. When in part nership with God all things are possible. My friend, to whom I referred above, searched a- round in his wallet and finally pulled out a card which he said I gave to him when I confirm ed him into church membership a number of years ago. It read, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me*. Life for all of us is compli cated and troublesome. All of us have troubles. There are two kinds of us - those who have the help of God and those who try it alone. Jesus said, “In the world ye shall have tribu-v lations, but be of good cheer I have overcome the world*. No matter what the problem may be, all we need to do is stay close to the One who knows how they are to be solved. Then when we get directions from Him, we go on out and do it In a recent address here in Charlotte, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale used, as a topic, “Prob lems*. All people have prob lems. If there were no problems there would be no opportunities. Seek the help and guidance of God in their solution. Finally, after asking, go out and act like you had already received it. Food cooked at home and taken <>n a picnic should lie kept at temperatures ab ve 140 degrees F. Soft, non-acid f ds such as chicken salad, egg salad and potato salad should be kept at temperatures bel w 45 de grees F. Portable ice chests and vacuum jugs serve t > keep fo d cold or hot. Many foods such as meat and fish which are tube tarbecyred on a picnic can be taken fr - zen to the site. Withexpenence, you can determine h w t pack and when to start thawing t have the meat at right temperature for cooking. It’s important to rem ve per ishable foods as son as y-u are through eating and return them to the portable refrig erator. Harmful bacteria may multiply rapidly in foods permitted to remain at warm temperatures very long. Be wary of leftovers from a pic nic. -- Marie S. Hindman, ex tension specialist, nutrition. Q. Leaves on my boxwoods are turning yellow and falling. The little limbs have a gray appearance. How can I save it? C.M.A., Ware Shoals. A. Several problems can cause the yellowing and leaf drop. Among these are planting too deeply, overfertilization, nematodes, left spot diseases and winter damage. Shake all dead leaves from the center of the plant and burn them. Prune out any dead iranches and spray with the fun gicide zineb. Also check depth of planting, along with fertili zation and watering prac tices. E. V. Jones, assistant ex tension specialist, horticulture. Q. We are being overrun with chipmunks around the home. They are digging tunnels under shrubbery, in the flower beds, and everywhere else. How can I get rid of them, other than get a cat? J.C.., Simpson ville. A. Many individuals look on chipmunks as moving orna ments, and they are valued Just as much as are the flowers. But in your case the damage appears extreme and you want help. You can obtain strych nine-coated mouse seed and place it in the burrows. These seed are frequently available from garden supply and seed stores, but be careful in how it is used. Also, perhaps you had better call the game war den or wildlife official’s office and get permission to kill the chipmunks before using the bait — W. C. Nettles, principal ex tension specialist, entomology and plant pathology. * * * [THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Honesty may not be easy,-but it is essential to a better world.
