Huw many women have can
cer but don't know it? The Pap
test is a simple way to detect
one f the leading kinds - can
cer of the cervix. Out of 12,500
women tested in the Pee Dee
area of South Carolina, 138 sus
picious cases and 27 positive
>>nes have been found.
"Since cancer is a matter of
life and death, it is very import
ant that we find every possible
case,' said Dr. William C
Marett of the State Board if
Health.
Dr Marett, chief of the Bu
reau of Adult Health Services,
said that more than 200 S. C.
women died from cancer of the
cervix in 1969. "Most of these
deaths could have been prevent
ed if each woman had taken time
for a yearly examination. Dr.
Marett pointed out that with one
excepti n all f the cancers
found by the Pee Dee Project
were In the early stage and the
women have been restored to
good health.
About 750 cases develop in
the State each year, but the Pap
test will detect the disease in the
early stage before anysymp-

Dr. Marett explained that the
Board of Health sponsors the
Tri-Cuunty Screening Project
and added, “I wish we had a
similar project to cover the
entire state.”
The Pee Dee project operates
free clinics in the county health
departments and in several of
the larger industries. M st
of the laboratory tests are run
by the McLeod Infirmary in
Florence.
A spokesman for the Infir
mary reports that the number
uf Pap tests sent in by private
physicians for their patients has
increased by a larger percent
age than normal since the pro
ject began. In 1969 the number of
Paps run by the lab increased
51^.
Financed with federal funds
through the South Carolina Re
gional Medical Program, the
Tri-County Project has been
in operation since August, 1968.
