District Conservationist
Soil Conservation Service
The Beaverdam-Warrior
Creeks Watershed Project has
been approved for operations,
according to a letter received
last week by Horace Martin,
Chairman of the Watershed Di
rectors, from HughJ. Dowdle,
Acting State Conservationist,
Soil Conservation Service.
Federal funds will now be a-
vailable through the Soil Con
servation Service for devel
oping plans for the installation
of works of improvement as
set forth in the work plan. The
structural measures included in
the plan are, one multi-purpose
dam, four floodwater retarding
dams and 36,800 feet of stream
channel improvement.
Structure No. 1, located on
Beaverdam Creek, from which
the Upper Laurens County
Water District plans to get wa
ter for the Town of Gray Court
and surrounding area, will re
ceive priority for construction.
Martin said work will be start
ed immediately on needed things
to be done for the clearnace
of this dam for construction.
Among these are, establishment
of land treatment measures;
obtaining land rights by the
sponsors; preparing final de
signs and specificationsbySCS:
raising local share of funds
for the structure; and finally,
advertising and awarding the
contract.
Martin praised the interest
shown by the local people. He
said local landowners have co
operated in organizing, de
veloping and operating the pro
ject plans. Also, much interest
and support have been given by
Mayor E. S. Euatt and the offi
cials of the Town of Gray Court.
Chairman L. B. Stoddard Jr. and
the Upper Laurens County
Water District, Representative
David Taylor and Laurens
County Delegation. These pro
jects are begun by local peo
ple and carried out largely
through local effort. The Soil
Conservation Service provides
technical and financial help in
planning and installing project
measures. The Laurens County
Soil and Water Conservation
District sponsored the original
application for the Watershed
District and is anxious to assist
other local groups in watershed
projects.

Juvenile
Center Site
Is Selected
LAURENS - The new juvenile
detention center for Laurens
County will be built in the
western section of county-own
ed property between Laurens
and Clinton, according to the
Board of County Commis
sioners.
Funds amounting to $28,000
have been appropriated and the
county's 1970-71 supply bill and
a federal grant "f $31,000 have
been approved for constructing
the Juvenile center and staff
ing it for the first year.
The commissioners agreed at
a meeting Tuesday that the
tract of land for the center
will front Secondary R"ad 274
and will not exceed five acres.
Tentative building plans call for
a structure of about 2,000
square feet.
The center will be under the
jurisdiction of the civil and
family courts of Laurens.

Timely
Tips
BY COUNTY AGENTS
Home Ec>n"mists
FALL GARDENS - Y-u who
plan to have a fall garden should
get your land ready. Squash and
tomatoes should lie planted a-
round the first of July. Also,
cabbage, collards, and other
vegetables could well l>e plant
ed at this time.
iq -ii HtUiJVitt : whHmw
^‘GRAW'SrmtfrUM _ There ?£*
still time to make good yields
of Grain Sorghum. Arkansas
6-14 and Georgia 6-15 are two
very go'>d varieties. Fertilizer
shi iuld be applied about the same
as for corn.
CANTALOUPES - To con
trol antliracnose incantal upes,
cucumbers, and watermelons,
use Maneb 80. They should be
dusted at least once a week.
Fall planting should be dusted
even at closer intervals.
MOLE CONTROL-Moles are
usually in an area seeking food
such as grubs or earthworms.
If you are bothered with moles,
apply an application of Chlor-
dane or Toxaphene and water
it into the soil good. This will
destroy the food supply and the
moles will seek food elsewhere.
SLICK TRICKS - Attach a
zippered pocket to one end of
your beach towel for holding
sun glasses, lotion and make
up. Pocket is made from a wash
cloth. First, make a slash in
the cloth along one side (about
2* from the edge). Cut just
long enough to sew in a zipper.
Insert zipper, then place wash
cloth on top of towel Stitch all
four sides of washcloth to the
towel. Zipper becomes the
pocket opening.
LAWNS: During the ex
tremely dry periods, such as
this, lawns need watering or
actually the grasses may die.
So, we suggest that you liter
ally soak your lawn once a week.
Do not cut the grass too short,
as this will also damage the
root system. Let’s hope we have
rain soon.
CANNERY OPENS: The Ford
Cannery, the only one we have
in the County, is open Tues
days and Thursdays, beginning
July 7th. It will open at 8 a.m.,
but they have to have the pro
duce there by noon eact
