HERBERT SPAUGH One of the heartening signs of the times is therenewedem- phasis on patriotism. Many homes are displaying the United States flag outside. It is a sym bol of our dedication to the ideals which made this Country One of these principles is our national motto, “In God We Trust’’. It is inscribed on the back of a paper dollar, along with the both sides of the great seal. Take out a dollar bill and look at it. On the left, one side of the seal displays a pyramid built of 13 layers of stone re presenting the 13 colonies. The cap stone of the pyra mid is a triangle within which is an all-seeing eye. It is an ancient symbol of God; the tri angle represents the Trinity. The cap stone is removed sight ly from the base of the pyra mid indicating that the United States is not complete without God at the head and man him self is not complete without God at the head. There are two Latin inscrip tions which translated into Eng lish read, “He has blessed our beginnings”, and “A new order of things”. • * To the right is the - other side of the greet seal. At the top is a glory containing 13 stars, again representing the 13 colonies. Below is the Latin inscription, “E Pluribus Unum” which, translated, reads “one out of many”. Below is an uncrowned eagle again indicating that God is the head. It is different from the crowned eagle of European heraldry which is much used in European countries as a symbol of the crowned heads of govern ment. Below is a shield containing 13 stripes, again indicating the 13 colonies. In the right claw of the eagle there is an olive branch, a symbol of peach with 13 leaves and 13 fruit. In the left claw are 13 arrows. Again, the symbolism is clear. First, we offer the olive branch of peace to our neighbors. We have the arrows, symbol of our defense when our offer of peace is re jected. Below are given excerpts from a beautifully inscribed scroll, “Can We Wave the Flag Too Much?”. “It is possible to wave the flag too much? Provided of course, that you wave it with integrity?. . Isn’t our flag a symbol of the United States of America? Attend Seminar Two Clinton firemen are at tending a Fire Service Instruc tor Seminar being conducted at the Greenwood Fire Depart ment Michael McGee andG. R. Simpson Jr., are being train ed to instruct others in the basic areas at fire fighting in a program coordinated by area fire departments and conducted in conjunction with Piedmont Tech and the State Technical Education Committee. Billy L Foster, Educational Director for Rireman training with the State Technical Edu cation Committee, is in charge of the program. Foster said, “This program is designed ter experienced firemen who also possess the ability toeotqmnni- cate effectively. * Each partici pant must have at least four years’ experience as a fire men in order to enroll in the program. The coarse began on June IS and will continue for four weeks Upon completion of the course, the firemen will be certified as instructors, qualified to teach a course in “Basic Fire fighting.* They may be called on, to teach less experienced mem bers at their local departments, or may be called on to teach in future seminars like the ones they are enrolled in now.
