Think About Your Hate
BY DR. HERBERT SPAUGH
“The family that hates well,
stays well. And stays together.”
. This is the opinion of Dr.
Ralph B. Greenson, practicing
psychoanalyst and clinical pro
fessor psychiatry at the Univer
sity of California at Los An
geles, according to Washington
Post - Los Angeles Times News
Service. This statement is quot
ed to make you think, not be
cause I approve of it. I don’t
MmAJagfclMpIfeid and ad-
vocated today about love and all
of its connotations.
There are at least four forms
of love: physical love; the love of
companionship; the love of par
ents for children and children
for parents; spiritual or sacri
ficial love.
Love is advocated as the an
tidote for fear and hate. The
Bible says “perfect love cast-
eth out fear”.
For every positive emotion
there is a negative one. If we
recognize love we must also
recognize hate. But recognition
of hate should not mean that we
advocate it as a personal emo
tion.
According to Dr. Greenson,
“Hate must be recognized as an
integral part of life and living.
We cannot love without hating.
The opposite of love is not
hate; it is indifference”. This
is difficult for me to accept
According to my thinking, and
that of many, indifference falls
between love and hate.
“But hating is not enough; it
should lead to some action even
if you, the hater, will be hated
in return. The pain and Retalia
tion must be endured. ”
Dr. Greenson concluded that
all pain, including hate, can lead
to thinking and action. I think
it is right and just to hate in-
justive and tyranny. . .violence
and war. . .poverty, starvation,
disease, and ignorance.
Now you, my dear reader,
do some honest thinking about
hate in your own life. If you
won’t admit to hate, then what
about hurt.and resentment which
are companion emotions?
Jesus said, “Love your ene-
nies and pray for those who
despitefully use you and perse
cute you.”
In the field of Christian or
spiritual healing which is re
ceiving much emphasis today,
important discoveries are being
made concerning what resent
ment and hate do to the human
emotions in producing physical
disease.
The veteran and well-known
advocate of Christian healing,
Louise Eggleston, speaking
from her vantage point of 82
years, says emphatically that
many of the diseases which lay
hold of so-called good people
“stem from their fear, hate,
and resentment”.
The observations of Dr.
Greenson might help to stir you
to some honest thinking and act
ions concerning your own emo
tional and spiritual life. What
are love and hate doing in your
life? I still think Dr. Smiley
Blanton’s book “Love and
Perish” is of tremendous im
portance. It is in paperback and
may be ordered from the Every
day Counselor, c/o this news
paper, enclosing $1 which
covers the cost of the book,
postage, handling, and tax.
