HERBERT SPAUGH Many parents of teen-agers are in the midst of the same situation as that presented in the letter on my desk now. It is a typical picture of an adol escent who has been allowed to grow up without too much com panionship with the parents. There has been little at home to hold him there, so he wan ders abroad for companionship, entertainment and excitement. He comes in at very late hours, resents any correction or ap peal to conform to the sche dule of the home. At times he reaches the point of downright abuse of his mother. As rela tions are strained between fa ther and mother, the father is disposed to take the boy’s side against the mother. The re sult is an explosive domestic situation, and a growing prob lem of juvenile delinquency. It is tragic that such situa tions are allowed to develop, when a few simple steps prac ticed throughout the y^ars would prevent it. Problems of juvenile delin quency in adolescense have their beginnings back in the days of early childhood The adoles cent boy or girl who becomes a problem to parents does so because he has been denied love, companionship or justice by his parents in early childhood. We have dealt with many of these cases and have found this in variably to be true. Even in a case such as that before me now, love, sympathe tic understanding, and compan ionship will offer the solution. Sometimes the child has grown so far away from the parents that some other adult may have to serve as intermediary and counselor. The adolescent wants to be understood, to feel important (which is a form of being loved and admired) and ne wants to do something on his own miative. Wise and unoer- standing guidance can help here All of this takes time, some times more than parents are willing to spare If the situa tion is acute, then more time is required. Parents of yooug children should never forget that adoles cence is ahead and they should prepare for those days. This preparation calls for the shar ing of parents’ time with the children. No matter how busy a fattier rnay be, he should set up at least one appointment a week with his family for com panionship on the level which the children desire. In addition, tliere should be the companion ship of the family going toge ther to the same Sunday School and the same Church. So many families fall apart here, allow ing ttieir children to scatter Family unity is essential on all of these levels. When I was a child there was never a ques tion of division about Church or Sunday School. We went as a family, just as my parents had done before rne. * * * City Welding Shop Heliarc and Metal Fabricating “Prompt and Efficient Service" 200 Oak St., Clinton, S. C.
