BY WHAT AUTHORITY?
Angered by Jesus’ cleansing of the temple,
the chief priest and elders of the Jews asked Jes
us, “By what authority doest thou these things?
and who gave thee this authority ?” Matt. 21 :?3;
This is a good question, and had the inquirers
been honest, Jesus would have told them plainly.
They were not, however, seeking to know the
source of his authority, but were trying to trap
him.
All differences are settled by consulting the
authority. To determine the correct spelling or
meaning of a word, we consult a dictionary. A
ruler is used to measure length, and scales are
used to get the exact weights. Do we have a simi
lar standard which may be consulted to get the
right measure to religious questions? Yes, we
do have such a standard. That standard is the
word of God.
Christ prayed that the same oneness that
exists between him and the Father should be
manifest among his followers. Jon. 17:28-21;
Paul begged the Corinthians to be united in
speech, thought, and judgement. 1 Cor 1:10;
The prayer of Jesus and the plea of Paul could
not be answered without a divine standard that
would give the right answers to all religious ques
tions.
A popular song asks the question, “What is
truth ?” Pilate asked this question of Jesus. Jon.
18:38; Jesus in his prayer to the Father said,
“Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is
truth.” Jon 17:17; While Jesus was on earth he
spoke the truth of God. Jon. 8:28; He promised
the Apostles that when he left to return unto
God. the Holy Spirit would be sent to guide them
into all truth. Jon. 14:16-17; 16:13;
The Apostles and certain disciples were di
vinely guided by the Holy Spirit to teach and to
record the truth of God. 2 Pet. 1:21; 1 Cor.
14:37; They were kept from the error of adding
to or taking from God’s word. When we read
what they have written, we can have their un
derstanding of the will of God. Eph. 3:3-4.
We have in the New Testament twenty-sev
en books which were written by those Spirit-
guide men. This is the standard by which all re
ligious questions are answered. Are you familiar
with its teaching? Eph. 5:17; It is your author
ity for all that you do in work or worship to God.
Matt. 15:9;
