West Clinton MRS. CLIFTON HEATON Poppy Day Is Successful Poppy Day, observed on Sa turday, May 30, was very suc cessful, Mrs. Henry Cronic, chairman, stated this week. Mrs. Cronic said she is deeply grateful to the people for their generous contribution tb this project, and to the members of the Clinton Camp Fires and sponsoring American Legion auxiliary members for their assistance. A total of $288.25 was con tributed by' those who wore the Memorial Poppy. Of this amount more than 47% goes back to the veterans in the Columbia V.A. Hospital and the S.C. Depart ment Rehibilitation Fund. Of this 47%, over 34% goes to the veterans for making the little red flowers. Local funds are used for Child Welfare and Re habilitation. Mrs. H.M. Young, president, also expressed appreciation to all that contributed and assist ed in this special project. Es pecially J. Leland Young, Broadway Theatre, for inviting the members of the Camp Fires to see the picture on Saturday afternoon. And also, Mrs. R.P. Chapman for arranging a win dow display and Belk's Dept Store for giving the window space. * * * First Naval Battle The first official naval bat tie of the American Revolu tionary War was one fought Oct 11. 1776. in which Americans led by Benedict Arnold were defeated by the British off Valcour Island in Lake Champlain RECEIVES DEGREE —Katherine W. Giles of the Presbyterian College faculty has just received her directorate in physical education degree from the Uni- v e r s i t y of Indiana’s School of Health, Phy sical Education and Rec reation. She has serv ed as director of the woman’s physical edu cation program at PC since 1%5 and current ly holds the rank of as sistant professor. Miss Giles received her un dergraduate degree from the University of of North Carolina and earned her HA at Ap palachian State Uni versity. Disgruntled chum says his boss won’t raise him even in a poker game Eugene Adams and son, Jim my, of Lancaster visited Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Leopard on Friday. Richard Campbell ofWillis- ton is spending a few weeks with his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. M.W. Adams. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Leopard spent Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Leopard, near Saluda. Also visiting were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Maffett and Dave Butler of Ninety Six; Mrs. Kathlene Butler and children of Saluda; and Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Fulmer and children of Johns ton. Mrs. Essie Crow of Newberry and Mrs. Mattie Burbage of Laurens spent the weekend with Mrs. Burbage’s sister, Mrs. Ella Harvey. On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sanders were guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Sawyer in Donalds. Weekend visitors of Mrs. Ada Center and daughters were Mr. and Mrs. Don Wilson and child ren, Susan and Laura, of At lanta, Ga.; Mrs. Essie Powell and Miss Helen Powell of Greer and Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Sex ton and Drew and Mrs. Luke Fuller of Greenwood. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Miller and children of Marion, Tenn, spent Saturday night with Mr. and Mrs. William Dominick. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Miller and children of Marion, Tenn. and Mr. and Mrs. William Dominick and daughters of Lydia MiU spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. James Dominick in Joanna. Debbie Wooten, RebaStarnes, Mary Humphries, and Peggy Nance enjoyed the weekend at Myrtle Beach. Guests of Mrs. L.H. Pear son on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lee and daughter, Jeanette, and Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Lee of Spartanburg; and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pearson and sons of Columbia. Darrell Whitsel spent the weekend at Myrtle Beach. Cecil Adams and Pearl Star nes spent several days at Lake Greenwood. Gary Laney of Georgia Sou thern College is spending the summer with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Laney. Mrs. L C. Heaton spent the weekend in Greenville with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Robertson and son, Scott. On Sunday they all visited Mr. and Mrs. Tho mas Bryant in Anderson. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Adams visited Mr. and Mrs. J.C. A- dams near Ware Shoals Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rollins and Mrs. O.R. Rollins attended the wedding of Mrs. O.R. Rol lins’ granddaughter, Mi^s Vic kie Rollins to Dean Curry at the North Laurienburg Baptist Church in Laurinburg, N.C., Saturday night. Kenneth Duvall, son of Rev. and Mrs. Raymond Duvall, left Wednesday for Youth Camp at the Church of God of Prophecy Campground in Batesburg. Weekend guests of Mrs. Mary Martin and Joyce were Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Pearson and sons of Columbia. Gail was bom in Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School in June of 1964- In December of ’64, Gail married Clyde Croy, Jr., of Clinton. The Croys now have one child, Christopher Clyde, 2, and they live in the Woodland Acres section, and attend Bethel Temple As sembly of God Church. Gail joined HOWARD’S PHARMACY in January, ’66. Gail has attended Cosmetic Training Courses by DuBarry and Ruben- stein and she was awarded a Certificate of Cosmetology from both compan ies. BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS SATTERFIELD Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Satter field announced the birth of a daughter, Leigh Anne, on June 5 at Bailey Manorial Hospital. Mrs. Satterfield is the former Miss Mary Ann Heaton, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Heaton Sr. of this city. GIBBS Mr and Mrs. Joe Gibbs Jr. anpounce the birth of a daugh ter, Susan Dianne, on June 4 at Bailey Memorial Hospital. Before marriage, Mrs. Gibbs was the former Miss Frankie Jean Streetman of Joanna. BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES Mrs. Vesta Mae Eubanks will observe her birthday June 11. Kathy Ficklin, Buster Wilson, Reba Starnes and Freddie Mc Lendon observed their birth days on June 8. Laura Net Shepard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shep ard, will celebrate her 9th birthday on June 13. On June 14, Mrs. Tommy Beaman and Terry Brewer have birthdays. Mr. and Mrs. William Camp bell celebrated their wedding anniversary June 10. On June 11, Mr. and Mrs. Le wis Wallenzine will observe their wedding anniversary. * * * William Morgan Is Featured In Revival Crusade Evangelist William Morgan of Joanna is featured in a re vival crusade underway this month at St. Joseph Old Fashion Holiness Church hear Bates burg. Services are conducted each evening, starting at 7:30 through June 20. Also featured is evangelist Vernon Bledsoe of Johnston. The church is located on Highway 41-26 about six miles from Batesburg. Church Of Christ Gospel Meetings Open On June 14 Evangelist E.R. Brannan of Montgomery, Ala., will be guest speaker in a series of meetings at the Church of Christ in Clin ton, June 14 - 19. Mr. Brannan was born in Nor wood, Ohio. He is married to the former Merle Moore and they have four children. Mr. Brannan graduated from high school at Montgomery Bi ble College and received the junior college diploma from the Montgomery Bible College. He received the B.A. degree from Huntingdon College, and the M. S. and Ed. D. degrees from Au burn University. An additional year of graduate work in Bible was. completed at the Harding School of Bible and Religion. Mr. Brannan is presently preaching for the College Church of Christ where he has served for the past fourteen years. Mr. Brannan joined the fa culty of Alabama Christian Col lege in February, 1949. He has taught in both the high school and college departments. He has served as guidance counselor, principal, assistant to the Pre sident and as Dean of the col lege (1955-69). He was recently appointed Academic Vice-Pre sident. He presently teaches in the Bible and Psychology De partments. The Church at Christ invites you to attend these services. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. * * * Local Students Receive Degrees From Furman U. Two students from the Clin ton area took part in graduation exercises at Furman University on Sunday, June 7. Mary Helen Smith of Kinards was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree, and Donald Ray Grasiano of Clin ton received a Master of Arts degree.
