n Clark Returns Navy Seaman Recruit George W. Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Clark of 511 Gary St., Clinton, has returned to the U. State Employees’ Association which will hold its three-day annual meeting beginning Fri day, June 5,in the Ocean Forest Hotel at Myrtle Beach. Rogers is director of cottage life at Whitten Village. Governor Robert E. McNair is scheduled to present the an nual Outstanding State Em ployee Awards during a dinner meeting Saturday, June 6. The Association presents two such awards each year, one to a man and another to a woman. In-service training sessions which were added to the pro gram a few years ago will con tinue this year. Mr. W. Stan ley Finch, Director of Public Relations and Sales Training for Texize Chemicals, Inc., Greenville, will conduct one of these sessions Friday after noon and another on Saturday- morning following a business meeting. - —— A Saturday afternoon pro gram titled “Plus-es of State Employmentwill feature F. Earl Ellis, Director of the State Personnel Division, and Tatum W. Gressette, Director of the State Retirement System. Pro fessor Robert H. Stoudemire of the University of South Carolina will preside. Association President Rog ers, Sr. has predicted “record- breaking attendance at this year’s meeting, due mainly to the popularity of the extended format of the programs and to the magnitude of the problems and issues now faced by all state governments." A third award to be pre sented during the meeting is the Shillito-Hammett Scholar ship established by Comp troller General, Henry W. Mills. The $500 scholarship is awarded annually to the son or daughter of a member of the S. C. State Employees' Associa tion. A Roman law of 139 B.C. provided that each voter should use a carved wooden ballot to indicate his choice for candidates for the co- mitia centuriata. Lewis Hammet Honor Graduate At Ft Pierce Lewis J. Hammet, designated as an honor graduate of Dan McCarty High School of Fort Pierce, Fla., was one of 428 to receive diplomas Monday night atthel970Commencement exercise. He earned the academic Gold Tassel by compiling a 94 aver age in seven subjects this year, combined with two previous years of work at Clinton High School. Speech Workshops Planned Summer workshops in speech and drama will begin the week of June 8 at the home of Mrs. Dianna Clements. Those who sign up for the workshops will be given a choice of two two-hour work shops per week or one two- hour workshop per week. Mrs. Clements said the goals of the workshops will be to teach speech and drama techniques and to give experience both in presentations of one’s own ideas and the presentation of the i- deas and characterizations of others. Diction, poise, stage presence, pantomine, techni ques of presenting speeches of different types and the tech niques of acting will all be taught in the workshops. Mrs. Clements said, “This is for young children as well as high school and college students who are interested in speech and drama. We feel that these workshops will be of help both to shy children and to children interested in drama. A class room grade for a young child may depend upon his or her oral presentation in class.
