BY SALLY SHAW
DEAR SALLY: My girl and I
have decided to become en
gaged. She and I would like very
much to have an announcement
party, but her parents have nei
ther the space in their small
home for the party, nor are they
financially able to bear the ex
penses. My parents have volun
teered to host such a party.
Would this be proper and id
good taste? STEVE.
DEAR STEVE: This would be
all right ONLY if your girl’s
parents are consulted first and
agree, and ONLY if they are
the ones to make the big
announcement of your engage
ment to the guests.
DEAR SALLY: My husband
and I are very much distressed
over the “extra-curricular” ac
tivities of a certain young mar
ried woman in our neighbor
hood. On a number of evenings
recently when her husband is
out of town, we’ve seen her amb
ling out of her house with a
strange man and roaring off in
his car. Since we are very good
friends of her husband, don’t
you think we should tell him
what is going on behind his
back? WITNESSES.
DEAR WITNESSES: Absolu
tely not! For one thing, you
might very well be misinter
preting what you’ve seen and
the young woman’s outings
could be perfectly innocent ones
with a relative. Secondly, this
is none of your business what
soever, and even if your inter
pretation were true, real
friends do not deliver the kind
of news that could hurt.
DEAR SALLY: My fiance’s
sister wants to sing at our wed
ding. The big trouble with this
is that she CAN’T sing . . .
my fiance knows this, and
everybody else knows this . . .
except her. She’s a sweet per
son, and I don't want to hurt
her feelings - - but if she does
sing at my wedding, I’m sure
she would make the entire
ceremony a travesty. So, how
can I handle this? PERPLEXED.
DEAR PERPLEXED: Tell her
as gently and kindly as you can
that you and your mother have
already planned the music and
that you have already planned
for her to serve as one of your
bridesmaids.
DEAR SALLY: Do you think
the parents of adopted children
are required to answer the
probing questions of friends re
garding the background or his
tory of the children? Some of
these inquisitive persons even
go so far as to express curio
sity over whether or not the real
parents were married!
CANADA
DEAR CANADA: Indeed not!
Best answer to the tactless
questions of such nosy busy-
bodies is no answer at all!
DEAR SALLY: Does the fact
that a girl is 29 and a man only
26 stand in the way of a happy
and successful marriage?
We’re deeply in love, but our
parents claim that no man would
ever marry an “older woman.”
B and B.
DEAR B and B: No. If you
two are deeply in love, that’s
all that matters.
DEAR SALLY: A certain girl
in our crowd is forever sing
ling me out as a listening de
vice for the latest dirt she has
gathered on some other mutual
friend. She usually begins with,
“Now don’t breathe this to a
soul, or if you do, don’t tell
them where you got the story,”
and then she sounds off with her
lurid tale. I don’t care one little
bit about listening to this gar
bage. So how can I put a muzzle
on her? EARFUL.
DEAR EARFUL: By telling
her Just what you've told me...
that you don't care one little
bit about listening to her kind
of talk.
