HOW
CAN I?
Q. How can I remove stains
caused by leather rubbing a-
gainst a fabric?
A. These are among the
“tough ones.” However, if the
fabric is washable try a thick
soap-and-water solution, rub
bing well over the fabric. You
might make matters easier, too
if glycerin is worked well into
the stain beforehand and allow
ed to stand awhile before wash
ing. For unwashable fabrics,
try glycerin, working this into
the stain carefully by rubbing
lightly between the hands. Let
remain awhile, then rinse by
sponging with water.
Q. How can I thaw frozen meat
quickly?
A. Try wrapping it in alumin
um foil, then placing in a mod
erately hot oven for 10 to 15
minutes.
Q. How about the cleaning of
oil paintings?
A. If these are very valu
able paintings, it’s best always
to get a professional job done
on them. However, if you want
to try it yourself, wash them
with warm milk and water, rub
bing gently and carefully, and
then drying without rinsing.
Q. What can I do about bot
tles that have become badly dis
colored inside?
A. Try filling them with wa
ter and borax, then allow to
stand awhile. If this doesn’t
clean them to your satisfact
ion, drop some broken egg
shells or BB-shot into the bo
rax solution, then shake the
whole business well.
Q. We have some glassware
whose edges have been chip
ped and the sharpness makes
drinking a rather hazardous
thing. Is there any remedy?
A. You can often smooth those
edges nicely with a fine grade
of sandpaper.
Q. We have below-ground
basement windows surrounded
by window wells, and the win
dows inevitably become splased
with mud and dirt in heavy rain
storms. How can I remedy this?
A. Dig out about three or
four inches of soil and replace
with an equivalent amount of
clean gravel. This will prevent
mud from splashing up against
your windows and will also ex
pedite
days.
drainage during wet
Q. How can I remove old
blood stains from handker
chiefs?
A. You can usually soak these
stains out in a solution of two
tablespoons of ammonia to a
quart of cold water.
Q. How can I do a good job
of cleaning my bathroom cera
mic tile?
A. Scrub this tile with a mix
ture of two parts detergent and
three parts vinegar, using a
brush, and giving special at
tention to those strips between
♦be tile blocks.

families with an animal income

Families with less than $3,000

BY DR. HERBERT SPAUGH
Take care of what you have
and you’ll have something to
take care of. I keep pounding
this message out with the hope
that more will learn by ex
perience this invaluable truth.
We Americans don’t know how
to take care of anything. We
live in a society of planned ob
solescense. We throw away
enough food to feed countless
thousands. Our waste pollutes
our streams and the air we
breathe. The tons of garbage
we make are fantastic. We sim
ply don’t know how to take care
of what we have.
We slowly are beginning to
consider care of personal health
as important, but still too many
people burn themselves up and
wear themselves out not taking
proper care, and come to a pre
mature grave.
A great need now is to learn
how to take care of personal
property all the way from lawn
mowers to houses. A friend told
me the other day of having heard
the Rev. Bob Harrington,
“Chaplain of Bourbon Street,”
New Orleans deliver an address
on the subject of our waste-
fullness with our assets. He
told how some 10 years ago he
attended the formal opening of
a beautiful new public housing
facility in St. Louis, Mo. The
houses were well built, the pro
perty beautifully landscaped.
Ten years later when he re
turned the property had degen
erated to a virtual slum.
Take a look at yourself, at
the changing neighborhoods in
your town, and see how quickly
the property deteriorates. This
is because the owners don’t take
care of it. The occupants don’t
take care of it. They can be
trained to do this in two ways.
Either as children, or by neigh
borhood regulation. Some pub
lic housing facilities are well
maintained. This depends upon
tbe management By like token
the maintenance of the home
depends upon the husband or the
wife.
I was reared in the strict
tradition of taking care of your
personal property. I still have
the wood-working tools which
were given to me as a boy.
My children are all grown and
married. The same stone blocks
with which they played as child
ren in our home are still care
fully preserved in their fitted
boxes. Now the grandchildren
play with them. There has
always been one rule, if you play
with them, you put them up.
There’s so much talk about
the need for public housing
sponsored by the government.
If the government is going to
spend tt; taxpayer’s money in
these projects, it ought to spend
some more in sefetnfctMrt they
are maintained. It can brf done.
Its been my experience in
the average six to seven room
house, there is at least one
small repair job a day to main
tain the property. Do these Jobs
as they occur and its no prob
lem. Let them accummulate
and you have an expensive re
pair and renovation job.
What I write about the care
of your property applies to the
soul. Take care of it for one
day you are going to have to
give an account to God of what
you did with it.
