C., May 21, 1970 Bell Street Happenings BY RENE KNIGHTON On last Tuesday evening, the Senior players of Bell Street High presented their annual Senior Class play entitled ‘Gateway To Happiness”, un der the supervision of Miss Sara Johnson and Mrs. Connith Young, senior advisers. A Student Council election was held on Thursday. Can didates gave brief campaign speeches, after which the stu dent body cast ballots. The votes were tallied and the results are as follows: Pre sident, Donny Davenport; vice president, Bernard Lindsay; secretary, Michael Gilliam; as sistant secretary, Joanne Jones; treasurer, Joseph Price; Chaplain, Shirley Summers; Parliamentarian, Sara Cromer; reporter, Julia Byrd; Miss Stu dent Council, Rheatha Taylor. These officers will assume re sponsibility in the fall. The Junior and Senior Band Concert presented last Sunday, under the direction of Mr. Lee Ruff, was well attended and en joyed by everyone. The concert was concluded with the Junior and Senior Band playing the National Anthem. South Carolina textile plants had only 570 employes in 1840, according to the U.S. Census of that year. Flag Presentation On Saturday, May 16, the Med- lock-Simpson Post Number 3354 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars presented Cub Scout Pack 194 an American Flag. Making the presentation was Lawrence Aiken, Post Com mander. Also present from the VFW Post was Carl Barnett. Accepting the flag was Cub- master Riley Gilmer. Members of the Cub Pack who were present were: Front row (L to R) William King, Wayne Hornsby, Roger Reynolds, Da vid Farmer; back row, Giles Gilmer, Wally Heaton, Darren Stroud and Tony Farmer. The Den Mother is Mrs. Nancy Far mer. Thompson Is Elected Benjamin L. Thompson of Clinton was elected first vice president of the S. C. Morti cians Association last week at the organization’s 45th state convention. The convention was held at the Holiday Inn in Camden. John Ramseur of Rock Hill was elected president Mr. Thompson is a graduate of Bell Street High School, Be nedict College and the New England College of Embalm ing in Boston, Mass. He is for mer principal of Wesley Chapel Elementary School in Darling ton County and also is a former debit manager for N. C. Mutual Insurance Co. in Bennettsville. Pvt Kuykendall Scores 'Expert' With M-14 Rifle Army Private Lawrence A. Kuykendall of Company D, 9th Battalion, 2d Brigade has scored “expert" with the M-14 rifle here. He achieved his •expert’s badge" by hitting 60 or more targets out of a pos sible 84 while firing on the Training Center’s Record Fir ing Range. Private Kuykendall is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence C. Kuykendall of Rt. 1, Box 74, Clinton. Lehn, Lee In Concert Collie Lehn and Joey Lee, both of Clinton, will participate in the annual spring concert of Furman University’s Gamma Eta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, national music fraternity. The program will be held May 24 at 3 p.m. in Theatre 70 Play house on the Fur man campus. In addition to general public and students, a number of parents and friends of Phi Mu Alpha members are expected to at tend. Selections will be presented by the fraternity’s Men’s Chorus.
