THE PRINCE OF PLEASURE
By Lennart Pearson
Head Librarian

THE PRINCE OF PLEASURE AND HIS
REGENCY, 1811-20. By J. B. Priestley. 304
Pages. Illustrated. Harper & Row. 1969.
George the Third is probably best remembered
as the British king whose political sins are per
manently catalogued in the American Declaration
of Independence. His end, alas, was not a happy
one: he went slowly mad. By 181L, Parliament con
sidered him unfit to rule, and Frederick, Duke of
York, his second son, was made Regent. The Re
gency lasted until 1821 when the Lear-like old king
finally died and Frederick was crowned as George
rv.
This marvelously entertaining biography of
the Regent is really an account of this amazing
decade over which he presided as royal impresario.
For royalty and the upper classes, the Re
gency was a lark; for ordinary people, it was a time
of poverty and frustration. While lords and ladies
were outdoing themselves in fashion, furniture, and
fancy-dress balls, boys of six were being forced to
climib and clean chimneys and girls of fourteen
were selling themselves on London’s streets.
Wordsworth, Keats, and Shelley were in their
prime, writing literature almost unequaled in beau
ty, while sedition laws made free speech and pub
lic assembly for the redress of grievances almost
impossible. Particularly appalling was the dread
ful massacre that took place during a holiday
gathering in 1819 at Manchester—an affair not un
like those of recent days here: semi-offical mur
der committed by panic-stricken militiamen charg
ed with keeping the peace.
The Regent himself comes through as an ab
surdly extravagant, capricious, and self-indulgent
prince of pleasure. He was, in the words of a con
temporary, “the most extraordinary compound of
talent with buffoonery and good feeling.” In short,
as Priestley puts it, “the age swings between ex
tremes of elegance and refinement and depths of
sodden brutality and misery.”
Priestley—essayist, playwright, literary critic
and historian—writes with polish and wit. He is
obviously intrigued by the fact that magnificent
writing comes out of periods of political and social
turbulence. The Regency w-as such a period, and
so was the Elizabethan Age. He also has some in
teresting comments about royal style as the em
bodiment of national ideals.
Pictures abound, and many are in color. Fash
ions, inventions, cartoons, portraits, water-colors,
drawings, and photographs all contribute to the re
capturing of a fascinating interlude between the
end of England’s Augustan age and the arrival of
Queen Victoria

Hares and Rabbits
In the United States, little
distinction is made between
hares and rabbits, both be
ing generally called rabbits.
Rabbits are smaller in size
than hares and have shorter
ears and feet. They are blind
at birth, while hares are
born covered with hair and
with eyes open.

HOW CAN I?
BY SALLY SHAW
pEAR SALLY; I've been mar
ried for six months to a wid
ower with a 16-year-old son who
lives with us. He’s a very nice
boy, and he and I get along
fine, but the thing that bothers
me very much is that my hus
band and I never seem to go out
anywhere without the boy , . .
to movies, concerts, country
club dances, and even weekend
trips. My husband is a wonder
ful man, affectionate, kind, and
devoted to me -- if only he
would realize that once in awhile
I’d love going out with him alone,
Just the two of us. Have you any
advice for me? MRS. K.
DEAR MRS. K: How about
telling your husband just what
you’ve told me? Maybe he’ll
feel flattered over the know
ledge that you want him alone
. . .and will do something about
it
DEAR SALLY: I’m engaged to
a fine young man who is not
yet financially solid. He has a
responsible position with a
large company with excellent
prospects, but which at present
pays him comparatively little.
He is filled with all sorts of
enthusiasm and ambition, and is
confident that some day he will
rise high in the company. He
wants very much for us to be
married, but I keep wondering
if it woukki’t be smarter for us
to wait until he is more firmly
established. HESITANT.
DEAR HESITANT: Why wait
until AFTER he’s arrived? This
could possibly stretch out into a
long time. If you’re in love with
each other and he’s armed with
all that enthusiasm, ambition,
and confidence, you could have a
wonderfully happy marriage
sharing in his climb up the lad
der of success.
DEAR SALLY: I’m a teen-
aged girl with abnormally
skinny legs which are a constant
source of embarrassment to
me. I’m always imagining that
other people (especially the
boys) are making fun of them. I
hajpen to be of a very slender
build all over — but most of an

can do about this, or do you

Q. How can I remove brown
spots that have formed on the
bottom of my electric frying
pan?
A. Place the pan in a large
plastic bag containing a cloth
saturated with ammonia, close
the bag with a rubber band,
leaving the handle containing
the electric element outside the
bag. In a few hours, remove the
pan from the bag, and you should
be able to wipe the spots off
with ease.
Q. How can I remedy a high-
crown hat that dents easily?
A. You can give itextrarein
forcement by spraying the
inside of the crown with your
favorite, quick-drying hair
spray.
Q. Have you any helpful hints
for hair that is hard to manage
after a shampoo?
A. Try using your spray on
your brush, instead of direct
ly on your hair. Then see how
your hair behaves -- and it
won’t have that sticky effect
either that sometimes results
from an overdose of spray di
rectly on the hair.
Q. What can I do when per
fume has been dropped on my
dresser top?
A. Rub with rottenstone and
a generous amount of lemon oil.

Q. How can I reclaim pota
to chips that have lost their
freshness?
A. Put them under the broil
er for a few moments, and this
will usually restore them to
their original crispness. Be
careful, though, not to brown
them!
Q. How can I deal with rust
that has accumulated on iron
railings outside my home?
A. First, remove the rust
particles with emery paper or
steel wool. Then prime the iron
with red-led (12 parts red-lead
paste, 10 parts linseed oil, one
part turpentine, and one part
dryer). After this has dried,
apply your finish coat of paint
over it.
Q. How can I impart a lovely
luster to varnished floors or
woodwork of any kind?
A. Cold tea is an excellent
cleaning agent. Many other such
tips on the care and cleaning
of woodwork are contained in
my household book.
Q. How can I easily stain an
unfinished picture frame?
A. You can do a good job of
staining with paste shoe polish.
Let this dry as you would your
shoes, then shine with a soft
cloth.
